Such is the chaos the Ying Tong cyber attack has caused that I only just noticed there was no new Weekly Chat! I don't know how much opportunity we'll get to post on this new thread but at least we can all curse the perpetrators en masse!
Happy New Week!
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Unknown said:I don't have any mice in my house, and I rarely see them on the land. The hawks, owls, and snakes eat them!
Nope, Clare, birds of prey and snakes can't contract the virus. Just mice and humans. Weird, huh?
Oh, by the way, I have juvenile red-tailed hawks somewhere close in my woods. I can hear them calling. So R.T. Hawk and his pale mate must be parents again. Woo hoo

Evening all:
Diane: I can see how that snake blends right in with its surroundings. Nature is so clever! Is the hantavirus as dangerous in your area as, say, in the desert southwest? Will the RT hawk chicks stay in the area? Speaking of critters, pesky mole has shown up in my garden again. :-(
Heather: Oooh, pancetta on mac and cheese - I could probably manage that.
Having yet another day out tomorrow with good friend who's been wanting to go to Ojai (pronounced OhHi with the accent on the Oh), a small town up in the hills. Then it's back to a more normal schedule next week. Big Memorial Day weekend coming up here - the unofficial start of summer.
Sorry I haven’t been on computer for few days. After last Friday’s Doc appt, a flurry of bookings – Tues MRI, Wed Doc, today (Thurs) knee surgeon. Gout is under control, for now. However I not only have 3 kinds of damage to knee, but the arthritis is severe. So knee replace booked for 21 Jun or cancellation. It will take me til then to complete the paperwork!!! Goodbye to bus trips booked August and New Zealand in October.
.
In the midst of this I upgraded (?) to Windows 10. Feel lost & confused and can’t sit at computer long enough to learn.
Fencing began Monday, yesterday no work as it poured with rain all day. Today they are busy cementing in posts.
Hi, Annette. Red-tailed hawks maintain their own territories, usually a half mile to maybe 3 miles. R.T. and his mate will stay here on my patch, and the offspring will move on to establish their own. For some reason, R.T. and his mate moved their nest closer to my house this year. He used to always disappear at nesting time and raise the young back in the creek's flood plain. But this year, he and his mate have stayed close, and I've seen them a lot.
I haven't looked for the nest. I don't want them to feel threatened. Also, hawks are really protective of their young. I'm pretty confident that he and his mate wouldn't hurt me, but no reason to make them anxious, and I don't know for sure what the juveniles would do!
My brother walks every day during his lunch hour, around a lake in Indianapolis. He was attacked last week by a Canadian goose! He accidentally got too close to the bird's nest. The goose hit him so hard with his wing that it broke my brother's eyeglasses!
Hantavirus cases are very rare here, nothing like the desert. It's been found in the mice, but maybe our winters weaken the virus and reduce transmission.Sorry your mole is back. You have such a time with them! Don't trip and fall over the mounds. Enjoy your day in Ojai!
Oh, AQ, I'm so very sorry that you have sustained such damage. Really hate to hear that you have to undergo a knee replacement -- and cancel your bus trips. Sending you healing energy. That's awful. Hope you're out of pain soon. That Windows 10 upgrade is kind of overwhelming. You'll get used to it.
AQ: Good to hear from you but sounds like all the wrong kinds of business - and now a knee replacement on the list. Still, you did really well with the first one, right? - followed doc's orders and all that. Still, don't like the sound of missed trips, especially the NZ one. I guess it would be pushing it to still do it. How long did it take you to recover from the last op? M computer upgraded itself without so much as a 'by your leave' one night when I was fast asleep, but haven't noticed too much difference. Then again, I opted for the boring old desktop and got rid of some of the frivolous and unfamiliar options on the new desktop. Totally exasperated that they did away with what I called classic Solitaire in favor of something they call "classic" Solitaire, which is called Klondike - no idea why and I don't see anything Alaskan about it...Still, the good news is that I stumbled on jigsawplanet.com.
Diane: I was thinking that maybe RTH Jr. would be moving out. Oh my, I didn't realize Canadian Geese could pack such a wallop - hope it didn't cost your bro too much to replace his specs. I've been watching our neighborhood crows go after our local hawk these last weeks. We have two "resident" crows that showed up with their own demanding offspring earlier this week after I tossed out some old bread chunks. Mouth open; insert food! What are the major changes you've noticed about Windows 10? I've a feeling I haven't been paying attention.
Have a good Thursday all.

We are still (miraculously) a Windows-10 free household. It has, however, gatecrashed the computers at work (not mine, happily) and has caused chaos.
