Manton Bay (Rutland) nest updates

Looking at the site at Rutland Water. Female having a turn of the eggs and now settling down again. Lovely and calm there as it is here in Northants.

Would be nice to do a diary for the MantonBay (Rutland) as update on other nests now takes ages to get to the end and update.

Do they have names for these two at MantonBay.  Please note I have changed the name to Manton Bay (Rutland) nest updates as a suggestion from Sandy.  Hope this meets with everyones approval.

  • Hi, have just looked in again.   Would have thought the ospreys here would have flown by now, but obviously not.

Lovely picture, Alan. Male appears to have gone then so just female and chicks to fly.Aren't they leaving it a bit late?????

  • Latest tweet:

"Three birds still in Manton Bay today! 5R(04), unringed female and 30(10) still on their usual perches, 29(10) finally started migration. "

  • Thanks Alan, both you and Vespa quite often post updates from RW well before I get them on my laptop - strange, I guess it's a browser thing. Anyway, I thought 5R went a few days ago! Obviously not. I hope they stay until the weekend so I can get one final fix for the season.

I don't know if you saw the photos on the birdguides osprey page this week, taken on Tuesday. One of the juves was in the dead tree and there are some great (copyrighted) pics on there.

  • Thanks Sandy great photos indeed. I understand that the Lyndon Centre is now going to be open 10 am to 4pm on weekdays until the end of September.

    Meanwhile latest tweet:

"29(10) seems to have left early Tuesday morning, not sure where 5R was hiding on Monday but been seen every day since. "

  • The photographer on Birdguides who took the photos on Tuesday got it wrong - it wasn't the female juvenile, 29(10), it was 30(10), her brother, who had been flushed by the wardens who were fencing at Shallow Water hide.

  • Thanks Lynda for clarifying that. I was a bit confused by the juvenile female bit.

  • Still 3 ospreys in Manton Bay, latest tweet:

Still three ospreys in Manton Bay... Visitor Centre open today 11am-3pm, reserve open until 8pm.

All three still there by early afternoon when I left Manton Bay after spending another wonderful morning at RW. Both parents spent most of the time on their favourite perches with 30(10) shuttling between them, screaming to be fed. After being studiously ignored by both parents 30 decided to catch his own fish and took it to eat on the far T-perch next to Dad.

Amazing that all three are still there this late in the year as, despite the glorious weather, things had a decidedly autumnal feel with huge flocks of birds beginning to accumulate, including one small group of Little Stint that arrived late morning.

I can confirm that the Lyndon Centre will now remain open daily until the end of September (although part of the Egleton Reserve has had to close because of the ongoing habitat creation work).

  • Great pic Sandy. Unfortunately I havent been able to make it to RW and it looks like Mrs 5R and 30(10) may have gone:

"5R in Manton Bay this morning, no sign of the female or 30(10) since yesterday afternoon "

  • Thanks Alan - it looks like they held on just long enough for me to get a final viewing of the season - how considerate of them!

After 30(10) caught his fish Mum finally got off her perch and had a good fly round the bay. I'm pleased to say that she looked in fantastic condition for her long journey ahead, her plumage positively radiant in the sunshine:

Here's wishing them all a safe passage and hopefully the adults will be back in Manton Bay in 2011.
