THE LOCH GARTEN OSPREY GABFEST FOR MAY, 2016

I think I will start MAY, 2016 quite simply with a current snippet of the LOCH GARTEN NEST with EJ quietly incubating her three eggs.

Yes, very likely.  Weren't you expecting an influx of males to this area soon.  I hope they arrive quickly, certainly by next mating season.  And Oh for more nests - in the right locations, as they are so  particular.

  • Most Ospreys will breed for the first time around 4 years.

They are ready to breed for the first time in their third year but it unfortunately takes longer to find a nest site and mate.

The first ever known 2 year old to breed in the UK was at Rutland a young female in 2003. This is a rare event.

This was a study carried out by Roy in Northern Scotland for first breeding numbers.

Well that got me to pull out Roys - Life of Ospreys.

Retire Now - Not got over yesterdays travel yet and at it again Saturday to Athens (Greece).

  • I do have Roy"s Life of Osprey, Thanks to Fish.  I should read and think to refer to it more often.

[/quote]I can understand why certain Visitor Centres provide names for ospreys and some are very good. I admire DOP in their choice named after particular sites and traditions. Likewise for Loch Garten.

Some centres though will not give names notably LOTL who prefer to use the ring number and if No ring use F15 the female who came to residence in 2015.

To me the young female from Dyfi is 2R but accept Clarach and it is a lovely Welsh Name.so maybe accept it a little more.

  • Monty, you Scoundrel!

Yes, I'm humanizing and yes, I WILL humanize.  MONTY, YOU ARE DISGUSTING!!    Sorry, Monty fans, but he just became my favorite villain.

  • JUNE - From HERO TO VILLAIN.

I think its time for a song.

    HEROES AND VILLAINS

I have also extracted this from DOP Blog dated 17 April 2016. To read this particular blog in full click on this BLUE 24 LAYS AN EGG

It is not Monty's fault, it is not Blue 24's fault. It's nobody's fault. These are ospreys and they are behaving like ospreys. We should not judge them by human standards (whatever those are these days).

  • Keith, Yep, too true--they are just being Ospreys.  No point in castigating them for behaviour we might disapprove of in humans, though, of course, some humans behave just the same as Monty!

June, I understand how you feel but I imagine you may forgive Monty should Glesni fail to return one year and Blue 24 is there to save the day and produce more Ospreys!  Glesni and Blue 24 are the same age and still relatively young for Ospreys, so Blue 24 may well get her chance one day, with Monty or another male, so please do not lose hope for her!  With luck, the situation of there being two nests so close together on the Dyfi Estuary will be solved over the next winter, fingers crossed, which should improve matters, I hope!

    Kind regards, Ann

  • I am just getting madder and know why.  I am humanizing TOO MUCH  (everything in moderation  :)   relating this osprey situation to similar real life situations I have known in the past as a child social worker dealing with neglected and dependent children.  So before making any further comments, I will go to my Bible study meeting and cool down.  See y'all later.

  • June, Sorry if I upset you--hope you feel better when you come back to the Forum.  Not sure if platitudes help but my Mum used to say 'In a hundred years it will never matter.'  Let us hope there are far more Ospreys in Britain (and the world) by then!

    Kind regards, Ann

  • Gardenbirder - Not sure why you are Sorry

Your posting at 8:53 summarised the situation perfectly.
