Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 27 September 2015

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Last week's Chat thread is here.

This is a very special week because it begins with a rare astronomical phenomenon. On 27-28 September, most folks on this thread can enjoy several coinciding events:

  • A full moon. The moon will turn full at 3:51 a.m. in the U.K., 10:51 p.m. in the eastern U.S., and 7:51 p.m. in California.
  • The closest full moon of the year. Within an hour of becoming full, the moon reaches perigee and its closest approach to earth for the year of 2015.
  • A Harvest Moon. This is the moon closest to the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere.
  • A total lunar eclipse!!!
  • This is the fourth and final eclipse of a lunar tetrad. A lunar tetrad is four consecutive total eclipses of the moon (with no partial lunar eclipses in between), each of which is separated from the other by six lunar months.

You can find complete info here and here.

Everyone have a wonderful week!

  • LINDY - You had hoped to make an insurance claim, maybe, LOL

Speaking of insurance, I just renewed our annual travel policy. OH nearly fell off his perch when I told him how much it cost.

  • Do shop around for insurance, Heather.  I know it goes up when you get over 70, and then on & on up.......    But we found that if you ask around & do some pc research, it varies considerably.  A lot of insurance companies over insure - that is, they give you far too much cover, for a lot of things you will never need.

Here are some more Flower Show pics, while I still have time:

Remember that last year they had a Ferris Wheel with flowers?  Well, this year they also had a colourful Roundabout.

Not one of my favourite exhibits:  it was supposed to make you enjoy the sky above, by looking through the plastic! But we thought it ugly.....

Didn't like this one, either...... too artificial.

Pretty, but the grass looks messy!!

  • LINDY - We have stuck with the same company for the last few years because they haven't yet sacked OH because of his age. When my OH was hospitalised in Tenerife in 2003, he got brilliant treatment in a private hospital, I was put up in a nice hotel (our holiday time had expired two days after he was taken ill) and we were flown home. No connecting flight to Inverness but a car waiting at Glasgow to take us home. Guess what! They refused to insure us the next year and OH was only 73. So we searched around for another company and will stay with this one as long as we can. It does get dearer every year, though:-(

  • Right, I've done laundry, gardening, packing, and collected the car from the M.O.T. (she was fine). Now I have 5 minutes to put on a few more Flower Show pics.

The man with the carvings was there again.  A lot of interest from passers by.

This beauty had "sold" written on it - I wonder where it is now!

We were very tempted to buy this one!

  • All kinds of animals & birds:

And all kinds of plants and trees:

Notice that these are trained into fantastic woven shapes - they were very very expensive!!

  • Back to the gardens.....

This represented the science of the Hadron Collider, I think.....  I forget now but it was impressive!

My favourite of the whole show - but then it always is, its done by a company who specialise in waterfalls etc.

Modernistic style,  viewed in the rain!

  • LIMPY   loved the "owl and the pussycat" and LINDYs poem to go with it.

LINDY   lots more great pics, thank you. That garden shed is wonderful.  We have 2 chainsaw woodcarvings in the garden, an owl and an eagle. We gave the name of the carver to a neighbour and he has a freestanding bear and another bear in the middle of a v shaped bench in his garden.

We have been out and about a lot in this glorious weather, long may it last. I will get time to put Viena pics on the site sometime.  We are off to Barcelona at the end of October so must post Vienna before then.

In the meantime I have the begging bowl out.   You may have heard of   "gosober for october"  It has been widely advertised and it is fundraising for "Macmillan Cancer Support". I have signed up for this and as some of you will know it will be a mammoth challenge for me. Anyway it is a great cause so if any of you do want to support me, sponsorship can be given on WWW.GOSOBER.ORG. a friend tells me she had to add .UK, bvut I didn't need to.  Where you look for the name, I am registered as Elizabeth Lewington.  Thanks . Must dash, Benson is pestering for his tea and then I am out this evening.  Oh by the way, I managed to squeeze it 56 lengths this morning.

Have a good few days away LINDY.

  • Bill Oddie is one of the Goodies

  • Hi all.   Thank you Diane for starting us off and for info re the moon.   Did get up to watch the eclipse and took some pics  - as I didn't have a telephoto lense they came out a bit blurry but so glad I saw it.

Had a quick look through all your news.   So sorry to learn about Margo's situation, hope you enjoy Brian Ferry at the weekend . Will be thinking about you.

Lindybird - love all your photos re the flower show and those wooden carvings - amazing what can be done with trunks etc.  Love the one of Matthew at the wedding and like your outfit too.

    Posting a couple of pics I took re eclipse;

this was the true distance from the house but the second one is a zoomed in one

the next one was taken by a friend who had more advanced photo equipment.

      note the difference!

  • Probably won't get chance to look in again this week as we are off on holiday on Friday to Dorset/Somerset border where we have taken an apartment for the week (flat is over the owners house).

Weather has been really sunny down here so far this week and is set fair for a few more days yet - although chilly first thing in the mornings which is only to be expected.

Will be thinking about Margot during this difficult time for her.
