Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 9 August 2015

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Last week's chat thread is HERE.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week, especially OG and Eagle-Eye, who are on holiday.

I had a wondrous experience on Thursday. Temps had cooled a bit, and it was very windy. I went outdoors, just to check my patch. I saw R. T. Hawk come from the direction of the creek flood plain. He was riding the thermals and soaring around and around. If a bird can look happy, he did.

Shortly, his big pale mate came from the same direction. She, too, was floating gracefully on the thermals. She saw me and stared at me for a minute or so, then she started soaring downward, floating in circles in my direction. She kept watching me and moving closer. I froze and made sure she could see my open hands (so she'd be reassured that I didn't have a gun).

She descended quite close to me, and I thought for a moment that she was going to come to me. I thought about holding my arm out to see whether she'd land, but I was afraid I'd scare her. She never screeched at me, and she wasn't diving aggressively -- just floating above me and looking at me curiously. Finally, she caught a thermal and lifted back up into the sky.

R. T. Hawk had been unconcerned, and he was soaring over the creek. His mate followed in his direction, and then they flew toward the ridge together.

I was very honored to see her so close.

The annual Perseid meteor shower will appear on 11-14 August. The waning crescent moon guarantees dark skies, so the meteors should be dramatic. Folks in the northern hemisphere should see 50 meteors per hour, with a third of that number in the southern hemisphere. Most of the meteors can be viewed in the wee hours before dawn, but you could get lucky and see a beautiful earthgrazer in the earlier part of the night. Info HERE.

  • Good Morning Everyone. Raining here. Our garden does need it, though, unlike Scotland, who are having their worst summer since 1985. The crops and grass are not growing, because of lack of sunshine and too much rain. They showed cattle already having to eat their winter food. Snow from last winter still in the glens, good enough for skiing.

You can tell your OH that the Met Office agree with his comments, Heather.

I would guess that Linda had such a good evening last night that she is having a lie in this morning. I hope that is all that has delayed her morning post.

Dibnlib, " Just a few lengths," for you, would probably be a good swim for me. My daughter likes to swim and says she finds it relaxing after a long day's work.
You definitely made the right decision about work, especially when the manager can't even be bothered to ask, how you are now. Pity you couldn't go elsewhere for your zip. I wonder if they will replace you, or expect the present staff to cover your hours.

  • Good Morning, All. No, Brenda, I didn't have a lie in, quite the opposite as I had an early morning appointment to go to our Docs to get fitted with a blood pressure cuff which I have to wear all day - ugh! Of course, every time it beeps and starts off, my blood pressure shoots up! I keep trying to think calm thoughts but just now when it went was bending down with sweary words for Bonnie, as she has brought in some twigs & eaten them on the carpet. She's also just stolen my tissue and chewed that up, too.
  • Hi, Lindy.  Having just read your post I can just imagine what the cause of your high blood pressure will turn out to be!!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Linda, Obviously, Bonnie is not helping your BP. OH had to wear his throughout the night too, which got him even more annoyed. You should go and visit a friend and leave Bonnie with your OH. LOL

  • I must apologise to Margo for not mentioning her lately - our thoughts are with you, Margo, as always.  I thought I would dedicate this song to you as I always find it an uplifting listen:

    Things Can Only Get Better

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Good morning all

LYNETTE - I hope that you have a lovely weekend away.

Yes BRENDA - I too am waiting to hear about LINDY's menu--

I knew about the hall carpet, from MARGO. The worst of it that the floors in the house are all concrete or similar, so will have to be drilled in order for the workmen to get to the leaking pipe:-(

I did a really stupid thing yesterday (again). OH and I were in the conservatory with the double doors open. We were watching/listening to the thunderstorm and looking at the very heavy rain which was coming straight down so not coming into the room. When I went to close up the doors, later, I found that the roller blinds on the doors were saturated. Pulled them down, they were soaking, and this morning I see that the rain has left horrible stripy yellow stains on the cream blinds. I am not very popular here.

Speaking of yellow stains, a far worse thing seems to have happened in the US, to the Colorado river. Terrible pollution will ensue, it seems.

DIBNLIB - Just shows that you made the right decision.

OH and I are going out to lunch today with middle daughter who is 'home alone'.

  • LINDY - just read your post and agree with CLARE and BRENDA re your B.P !!

  • Meant to write more, but got interrupted by a phone call. Annette: sciatica is a horrible thing, I hope yours eases off soon. dibnlib: How rude of them not to enquire about you, just shows you were right to pack in your job.
  • Yes, Heather. Margo says, this morning, that they think it is a repeat of the previous leak, which was repaired !!

Sorry about your conservatory blinds. I hope they don't have to be replaced :-((( Forget about them and enjoy lunch with your daughter.

  • Heather: Sorry to hear about the blinds.  It must have been very annoying to find out what had happened.  I heard this morning on The News that Scotland and in particular, the Highlands, have had the most rain for what was it?  about 100 years!  It has certainly not sounded good coming from your reports and also from George, as you seem to have been getting rain and storms even when its been relatively OK here.

Poor Margo - what a nuisance and at such a time, when she needs to be living quietly and enjoying time at home. Do wish there was something we could do to help.

      - -  Just had to stop typing as the darned thing went off again, and it hurt my arm - no winder my bp is going up!  The nurse said it should be about every half hour, but it seems more random than that, and is sometimes every 20 minutes.  I wore one of those all night & all day ones, once, and it drove me crazy when in bed, even though it was supposed to stop for an hour or two in the early hours.

Annette: My pretty yellow flowers are Primulas, from this springtime.  I love the first flowers of the year, and so many of them seem to be yellow for some reason.
