Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey Topics), 5 July 2015

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Last week's Chat thread is here.

I hope everyone is safe from the bad weather in the U.K.

Margo: Sorry it was so frightful for you.

Clare: Congratulations on your new opportunity at Minsmere. Enjoy!

Brenda: Sorry you lost your match with the men folks. :-) I'm sure your new roses are lovely.

Lindy: I hope you enjoy your time in Wales.

Annette: So glad you all had such a nice day at the beach.

Heather: I hope things are improving for your family in France.

AQ: I've enjoyed looking at your photos. I like the Koroit Library, the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, and the Portland Tram; also, I want to live in the little Kalangadoo Church with the green roof! Very lovely.

You might be interested in seeing this old Catholic church near me: see here and here. Built in 1886, it stands in the rustic, restored 19th century Billie Creek Village in Parke County. Also, here's the historic old Log Church, built in 1871, in what is now Turkey Run State Park/Forest near me.

Hello to everyone. I hope this post makes sense. My neighbors are blasting off huge fireworks. They terrify me. I hope they don't set the woods on fire. Poor, poor wildlife. I hate July 4th.

  • Clare: Oh darn. I'm so disappointed for you. Bummer.

Brenda: Yes, young kiddies are a great excuse to act silly.

Also good thoughts here for Rita.

    Off to start the day.

  • It was good to see Murray win his match, but Djokovic is still playing Anderson, who has a 2-1 set lead.

  • Well BRENDA, Andy won! And so did my OH, at the bowls today.

ANNETTE- I heard the result of the soccer during the night on BBC World service and immediately thought about you, watching it live.

DIANE- you may have had a lucky escape. I hope that the pilot is OK and that you will have gone shopping today...

OG- If given the choice I would have all our main meals at midday these days, always hungrier then than in the evening. Unfortunately OH doesn't agree.

The birthday lunch for Amy went well, the gas man arrived while we were eating so OH had to keep showing him the way as he went from one attic to another on his quest for a solution to our boiler problem.Happily, nothing majorly wrong.

Thanks to all for your posts-

  • Hi; wet evening, expecting wetter night, but some garden work accomplished today.

Heather - sorry you had boiler trouble. Hope the family in France can get sorted. Pleased the lunch went well, and hope Amy will be okay tonight.

Annette – how long will your Granddaughter have to remain near her ex and Miss D’s father – will it be until Miss D is fully grown up or is there an age at which she can say she wants to move away with her Mom?

Lynette – J isn’t involved with the Kid’s part of the mission – he is just doing the evening youth sessions – but he and we have all done a number of Kid’s Holiday Bible Clubs in the past.

Diane – so glad you avoided that road yesterday evening – but I hope you got out for groceries today! I am not totally in favour of crop-spraying from the air, but I hope the pilot will be okay. I guess he was injured by the crash rather than burning from the overhead lines – he would be insulated from them when the plane touched the wires, and then the current would have stopped when they actually shorted right out.

Clare – so sorry you had to miss Minsmere today – and I hope Helen is feeling better now.

Brenda – thanks for asking about the finger. I still have the bruise from the injection and get occasional bad twinges when I use it, but I even managed a small time of pulling weeds and dead-heading geraniums and Calendulas this afternoon, so it is getting better each day.

Margo – still thinking of you!

Special thoughts and prayers for Rita for tomorrow!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Clare: I'm sorry you couldn't go to Minsmere today. I hope Hellen feels much better soon.

Heather: I'm so glad that Amy had a nice birthday lunch. Very good that nothing was majorly wrong with the boiler.

Annette: I'm very glad you and family are having such a good time. I so wish your granddaughter could move back to California with D. :-(

Hi, Brenda, Lynette, OG, George, and all.

  • Rita: I popped in here to say that I hope you didn't catch the virus and your operation can go ahead as scheduled. Sorry you are missing your beautiful garden.

Margo: I also wanted to wish you the best week possible!

Here's a little card for you both to cheer you.

  • Diane - you obviously made an instinctive decision.  Hope you manage to get your shopping tomorrow.

  • OG - thanks for putting me right, But that part of it is still important. Trying to get a message through to the youngsters at their level.  Good on him.

Clare - hope Helen feels better soon. Its a pity you can't get in before July 16th.

Been really cloudy and a lot cooler down here which is great. It is nice to have the sun beating down but personally in our heat I prefer to be in the shade.

  • Evening all:

Heather:  Pleased to hear that the boiler will recover; also that Amy's b/day party was a success.  My sister in Lincolnshire called me about 10 minutes into the soccer match to say (she was joking) that maybe it was a good thing that England didn't have to play the U.S.  :-)

OG: G'daughter can't leave the state with Ms. D until she turns 18.  The ex- and g'daughter have got over a lot of the bitterness following the divorce.  Ex has since remarried and - finally - got his veteran's benefits, which has removed a lot of the stress he was under. They've both "moved on" and are a lot less competitive when it comes to Ms. D, thank heaven.  Thanks for adding a bit more info re that plane crash.

Rita: Thinking of you and hoping the knee surgery goes ahead as planned.  Let us know how you're doing when you feel up to it.

    Diane: Lovely card!

Lynette: Glad the weather is more comfy for you.

OH and I finally bought a car this afternoon - a used one or, as the sales people like say, a "previously owned" 2013 Honda CRV.  We were out and about all afternoon; saw a brand new 2014 that was going for a very good price, but it had oddly sluggish acceleration for being a new car and worse, was charcoal gray with a black and gray interior - rather claustrophobic and sort of depressing.  I'd seen the one we finally bought yesterday at a local dealer's and it seemed more sprightly than the newer one, so poor OH agreed to make one last stop late this afternoon to try it out. He agreed it had more pick up than the newer model - go figure.  Anyway, it was a one-owner vehicle and had been bought and serviced regularly at the same dealership. It's a "certified" used car (which in this case means it comes with an extended manufacturer's warranty), which is reassuring and has all-wheel-drive, which will come in handy for winter-time trips to Arizona. But let's get to the important stuff - the color: It's officially called "Twilight Blue Metallic."  So pretty - I really didn't want yet another 'Boring Beige" vehicle and I definitely didn't want a new "Gloomy Gray" one.  :-)

Off to bed - have a good Tuesday all and best thoughts to anyone who has docs' appointments!
