WEEKLY CHAT (non-osprey) SUNDAY MAY 24, 2015

Hallo all:  Was a nice day here.  :-)

OG: Welcome back; sorry you're feeling creaky!

  • I have a couple of pics I'd like show but dont seem able to do so. Any ideas?

  • Loved the pictures of the car museum which brought back a lot of memories I passed my test on a car that had running boards it was a 1936 Morris and from then on had a variety of different cars but then you could always tell the make of car as manufacturer had different designs. Do you also remember the Esso slogan put a tiger in your tank and you were able to buy the tiger tail.

It is a nice sunny day here but still with a cold wind. Went food shopping down to Marks this morning but home now as there is a barrowload  of sport on the tele this afternoon.

    Hope every one is well

  • Yes, George, I remember ' put a tiger in your tank ', but I don't remember us ever having a tiger tail :-))  I gather we have to wait until mid week for higher temperatures to arrive.

  • LINDY/ ANNETTE   My Grandparents next door neighbour was Welsh and taught me the Llanfair..gogogoch when I was young.

LINDY   This sounds like a very posh ruby wedding celeb. hope you enjoy it and that the sun shines for you.

So glad we ignored the Aviemore forecast for this morning (light and heavy showers) and decided to go anyway,  though armed with waterproof over trousers, hat and gloves. We didn't need them and had a lovely walk round.  MC first of course for a hearty breakfast. Didn't think my scram was quite as wonderful as usual, but a few seconds makes a difference with it and it was enjoyable. Had it with spinach, mushroom and oven roasted tomatoes. We watched as many footie fans boarded 4 coaches on the way to Glasgow. Apparently there were 29 coaches leaving Inv and 15000 travelling all together. Not a fan of the game but "...mon Caley"  Sorry for those not in the know, it is the Scottish cup final today, Inv versus Falkirk.

  • VIVIENNE  First send your pics to documents. On this site go onto "use rich formation". Then find inset/edit box (the wee green square in the middle of the other options). Wait a few secs and you will then be able to select browse. Then identify your document and open Wait until this is uploaded and select insert. This doesn't always work first time so try again.   Probably clear as mud, but good luck.

  • Hey, Clare and any other Corvid People:

I was unloading my groceries, and I saw a large bird chasing something small and vivid orange. At first I thought R.T. Hawk was catching dinner, but when I looked closer I realized it was a massive Crow -- one of our rural Crows that are as big as a hawk.  I couldn't tell what the orange critter was. The birds disappeared into the trees above my pole barn. So I put the ice cream in the freezer, and I decided to walk to the mailbox and get the mail before the predicted big thunderstorms move in.

I looked up and saw the Crow again flying fast and, this time, the little orange fella was chasing the Crow!!! It was a Baltimore Oriole. I haven't seen one in many, many years on this patch. It caught the Crow and landed on its back! It was scratching that Crow and making a nasty hissing sound at it. It took a vengeful swipe at one of the Crow's eyes, but missed. That little bird rode that Crow's back all the way to the woods!!! It looked so tiny compared to the big corvid, but it had courage. I assume the Crow had attempted to predate the Oriole's eggs. The Orioles must have a nest behind my barn. The Crow didn't seem to be carrying any eggs, so I hope it wasn't successful.

Hello to everyone. I just thought Clare would like the corvid story.

  • Diane: Love those feisty little bird stories.  It's not so much the motion of the boat that gets me; it's the smell of the diesel fumes that stick around when we're not moving.  Yuk.

  • Oh, yeah, that diesel STINKS, Annette. So glad to hear about your record whale count!!!

  • DIANE  thank you so much for your vivid description of the bird experience and for the link to the Baltimore Oriele. Seems the wee bird is relatively scarce now. What a lovely colour, hope you see more of it and hopefully the chicks.

As with others our garden is attracting a fair few Starlings and their chicks. We also have a solitary Crow visitor, but he doesn't stay long just takes a little food and off.

Caley Thistle won the championship 2 - 1, so we are well pleased, as will be a number of friends who went down to the match, headaches tomorrow no doubt.

Mum not answering her phone again tonight, try not to worry but cannot help it.

  • Hi! Been resting a bit more today, between minor domestic tasks. But I also filed a lot of paperwork, and even better half it went into the recycling or the shredder! OH is thrilled with the mower – finished all the grass in the one day! It has a Li-ion battery which charges very fast if it does run out.

Lindy – I hope you enjoyed the Champagne and Canapés party, and that the weather stayed fine for the anniversary couple. I wonder what Bonnie got up to while you were away!

AQ – good to hear from you. Miss L took a long time catching up with her sister’s crawling – funny how different they can be. Sorry about the car adding to your busyness – and a long time to wait for repair too!

Annette – hardware store was possibly called ironmonger when you were growing up over here. Oh, yes, the BBC Light Programme – my mother had it on all the time! Haven’t heard of BBC Rewind – dare I try it, or will I get hooked? That drought sounds so awful for you all – and action taken far too late as usual with such issues. Wonderful Whale results – enjoy the Volunteers’ get-together.

Diane – ginger is great for any kind of queasy tummy.

Tina – Starling numbers have reportedly been falling – people seem to have either none or too many! Ours have extremely noisy young right now, a cacophony of shrill voices calling for food all the time!

Brenda – I hope you get some good weather to plant out the new bedding – and then rain to water them in, of course!

George – I remember the tiger tails from Esso! I hope you enjoyed the afternoon of TV sport and that the right team one. I was thrilled with Inverness CT in their first Cup Final.

Dibnlib – pleased the forecast was wrong for your trip to Aviemore. I hope your Mum will pick up her phone next time you try!

Diane – great episode with the Oriole and Crow – always pleased when the little guy wins!

Got to do some watering in the greenhouse this evening – and check outside too, although will check forecast first as I think tomorrow may be wet.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
