DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten Nest ~ Friday, 22 May 2015

Last night when I started the DU thread I thought it might almost be the last one of the year. Little I knew that come morning EJ would be back incubating the egg.

EJ did spend most of the day on the egg but has now abandoned it again.

So we reach  22 May traditionally the last day for egg laying in the osprey season in Scotland. It is hard to believe that the egg laying season is over for another year and the hatching is about to begin. The male ospreys are going to have a hard time for the next   one hundred or so days.

For once Odin will be excused.

  • Agree, would have been wonderful yesterday, and two today or the same fish delivered twice??

  • This egg looks whole!!  is it a different  egg to the one EJ was incubating (which looked positively tatty!! )

  • So pleased EJ has been seen and that she is now sitting in a tree

It is the cam quality and markings that make it look tatty Cirrus. Seen after the night cam comes on, the egg always looks different and whole. Zooming in gave us a better quality view of it that's all.

  • Hello Everyone

Sorry that there is not much to report, I went to the Visitor Centre this morning was there from 10.20 am until 12.     Most of that time EJ was perched in a tree behind the nest.

The staff zoomed the HD Camera in to see her, but because it was zoomed in and it was windy the camera was moving so it made for a very shaky viewing of EJ on screen, so no decent photos of her, plus she was hiding behind some foliage.

At one point Odin appeared in the sky very high above the nest doing quite an aerial display of flying around, it was far off but as EJ was sitting calmly in the tree it was thought that it must be Odin who then just disappeared into the distance.    Later another osprey appeared and this time EJ mantled and alarmed called, after a few circles around the nest it disappeared over the forward hide.

Jen zoomed in on the egg and it does look intact but it is hard to call as you cannot see the other side of the egg.   Regardless of whether or not it is intact it will not be viable now.

What a sad season for the Staff at the centre and for us after everything was going so well, it just shows you can never predict what will happen, every year is different, it is probably the reason that we are so fascinated by them and how they have captured out hearts.    The main thing for me is that EJ and Odin are safe, god willing they will be back next year.    Standing in the centre my mind could not help drifting back to last year and the wonderful season they had, lets hope that 2016 is the same as last year.

    EJ was hiding out here.

This was the best photo I could get of the egg, as this screen isn't as clear as the new HD camera.

Anyone who has been to LG may have seen the little voles that scurry below the centre near where the feeders are, I have seen it in past years, well it was here today again, cute little thing, and boy can it move.  Wonder how long they live?

A couple of siskins at the feeder.

  • Thanks Mary great update. Shame EJ did not come for Odins fish this morning it was a substantial piece. However her silence means she is evidently not hungry and may have fished herself and eaten it out of site. Enjoy what's left of your holiday, they pass far too quickly

  • Thaanks MARY for your report AS you say EJ and Odin are safe and may be have a less stressful season next year
