DAILY UPDATE ~ Loch Garten nest ~ Friday, 15 th May 2015

EJ Finally Mugs Fenrir For The Fish.

Well yesterday there was little change on the nest - much the same as the last few days.
However EJ did get one over Fenrir as he was tormenting EJ with the fish he brought to the nest and EJ managed to nab the fish off him. I am sure all who were watching jumped for joy but we should remember Ospreys do what Ospreys do.
EJ continues to incubate the remaining egg, which I personally think is no longer any good. But what do I know ? EJ will know best of all. As for our boy Fenrir he continues working to try and get EJ off the nest so he can remove the remaining egg. It must be very hard on Odin to try to deal with what is going on as he can’t be everywhere at once. It must also be hard on Jen and her team and the volunteers so I do feel for them as they can see a lot more of what’s going on off camera so it can’t be any fun for them so far this season.
I would like to thank on behalf of the posters on here Birdie Num Num, WendyB, Mary GK and Lmac for keeping us updated  when they come back from LG with their reports so a big thank you – we also look forward to hearing about Hellen’s visit.

So a new day has started so what will happen now? God only knows.
I do hope and pray for one thing that this gets this nest sort out soon and that no Osprey gets seriously injured or worse killed.

But please remember  Ospreys are Ospreys and will do what their instincts tell them to do - we can only sit back and  wait for it all to get sorted.

  • I do not think people should place much faith in a second clutch even if it were to materialise. Second clutches have a horrible record.

If EJ and Odin get back in control of the nest that would be enough for this year.

However I doubt if the partnership will ever seem to be so stable again.

OMS it is not that EJ believes the egg is still viable it is just that she is hardwired for certain activities at this time. The hardwiring dictates that there are eggs and she should brood them. We have watch many nests where the females sit for many days past hatching, also evidenced in bald eagles and delta nest is an example.  EJ is also going through her moult which happens in an order after eggs are laid. There is an egg so she will incubate it and after 18 years bit hard to reprogramme her to do otherwise. Sadly we need to the egg to be kicked out.
Hi Lmac - the only reason I have been wondering NOW about the egg's viability, is that EJ seems to have changed her behaviour TWICE. Initially she incubated Odin's eggs - then when Odin went missing, and she eventually left the nest because of hunger, and Fen kicked the eggs out, she STOPPED incubating - the behavioural change as detailed in Paul's bathtub article. It's the fact that she has STARTED AGAIN and is obviously in full incubation mode that is intriguing. As other people have surmised, perhaps it's because one egg is now BACK IN THE NEST CUP, which as I recall, was completely empty for a while after the initial kicking out.
  • Thank you, CHLOEB and MOFFER.  All now understood!  Thought I was going mad.  Not likely that this one would be viable having stayed on the edge of the nest for so long before being retrieved, unfortunately.

  • But I think purely incubating because there is an egg in the cup. I can't remember when when 5 years ago??? One of the rutland males went missing and female was incubating refusing to leave eggs. When she eventually did they swapped the eggs for faux eggs. She continued for a while to incubate these while her real eggs were hatched and fostered into another nest. Can't remember but definitely one chick thrived.

  • Tiger - after reading your reply to my query - thanks again - I took the opportunity to look at the video and read the post on Henry's activities - both very entertaining and a bit of light relief this morning.  One thing's certain - whenever EJ's involved, there's never a dull moment.

  • Tiger you might be able to correct me but sure it was rutland. It was one of two male ospreys that died or disappeared suspiciously

  • Morning everybody, so nice to see the nest is and I whisper this, calm at the moment, darent hope that it might stay like this , maybe Fen is having a lie in.

I remember feeling so sorry for Lady sitting on eggs that never hatched this is worse, when EJs is just a broken shell

The more you rush, the longer it takes

    That's a fascinating story.
  • EJ sits, feathers blowing in the breeze, having a bit of a preen and a nibble on the sticks, silently.

  • All quiet on the nest at the moment, and a lovely sunny morning.  Would love to stay and chat, but absolutely MUST go now.  Will look in later on.  Cheerio for now.
