Daily Update ~ Loch Garten Nest ~ Sunday, 10 May 2015

Well not unexpectedly the season came to an end on Saturday morning when the intruding male broke the final egg.

As EJ is still in brooding mode she is still spending a lot of time on the nest brooding non existent eggs.

It now remains to be seen what will happen next. A variety of things could happen but as always with ospreys they will usually surprise us.

I guess the only way to find out is to keep watching.

  • She's back:

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

I trust the guys and girls at LG..

not sure of Aviemore Ospreys timings of fishing back to nest.

FB followers have often questioned them.

I too have many questions about the reports of Odin fishing there. A number of male ospreys look alike (as witnessed at Loch Garten this week) and there is also the fact that most reports are in retrospect. Loch Vaa is a far more likely fishing spot for Odin - and the Spey.

There is one helpful, but not infallible aid to determining the identity of the successful 'fisher', or perhaps to rule out certain males would be better. The male, having caught a fish, and then done his dog roll to shake off excess water, invariably sets off on a direct course to his nest. Anyone seeing an osprey fish successfully, if armed with a map and compass, should be able to work out the direction of the nest from the fishing grounds. It works.

Some people think Ospreys are a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

I am away for a while and I hope the blog later is good in relation to Odins perceived health. I for one am not celebrating until I have further info on Odins condition and his and EJ joint ability to rid the nest area of OC, which jen can provide. I think odin and oc have now been away for a while and not counting my chickens just yet, but truly hoping beyond hope that it is odin who comes home. Odin may not have been beaten or injured in ariel battle but may have injured himself flying into something so may yet beat off the young pretender and cohorts
Quite agree, Lmac. It is wonderful, fantastic, to have confirmation, both from LG and conjectures on here, that Odin is alive and flying around, in view of the horrible possible fates that I'm sure everyone has been imagining for him. But I think it's too soon to predict what the eventual outcome will be this season. I really do hope that EJ and Odin will continue their partnership on this nest, with or without another chick - but we will just have to wait and see - fingers crossed.
  • Interesting CRinger.  The day I was at aviemore the silver bto osprey thought to be LI fished left the fish on the bank. Went fly around and came back for it 5 or so mins later. I have photos although slightly blurred. I think osprey behaviour will continue to break the rules.

This is going to sound awful but it is such a relief to only be feeling sorry for EJ because of the weather!

Don't even feel sorry for EJ in the rain. She probably doesn't mind it at all - she's a super-waterproofed osprey! :)

  • Many thanks to Everyone for all the posts and pics.  What great news that Odin is back.  I could not believe my eyes when I read the news about 6.30 this evening.  It seems that 'here we go again!'  Fingers crossed that EJ and Odin are healthy and retain their nest, though a successful second clutch would be an added bonus!  Yes, I know the chances of success of second clutches are slim, but miracles are always welcome!

    Kind regards, Ann

[/quote]So why does she always look so cheerful when it's raining?
