I have seen that happen three times.
At Bassenthwaite 2006 there were no chicks at dusk and two at dawn.

And we also know some other bird species don't incubate at all until whole brood is laid, so that they hatch together, and the first laid eggs still hatch OK

I haven't observed many males routinely taking on the night shift in the couple of years I've watched the nests Stingray. Maybe something to do with the fact that they need to recharge energy for fishing next day? I seem to remember an exception last year, but can't remember who it was. Most likely Monty when Glesni took time off one night!
It seems that no chicks at dusk and two at dawn happened in Manton Bay in 2011. See this post
