Weekly Chat (non-osprey), Sunday 12th October 2014

Good morning, all!  Welcome to the new day and the new week.  I hope it goes positively for you all.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Here are some more pics from one of our our last Welsh breaks:  we were told about a quaint place near Portmadoc which is unspoilt and peaceful, and that we absolutely must go!!  So one Saturday, off we went.....

Here is the little town of Borth-y-Gest, on the estuary just up the coast from Portmadoc and the famous Portmerion.....  we were charmed right away, not only were all the houses painted in lovely colours, there was no charge for parking!!

We walked along the front, then followed the signs "to the Beach".... they took us around the point you can see, and this is what we found:

       -  -  its a real old fashioned, beach holiday place.  This was on a Saturday in late August!!  See how crowded it is LOL!!

We enjoyed the various little coves, then walked back again, down a tree lined path:

  • Welsh Adventure, continued.....

On the way, I found an interesting fungii - this was larger than my hand, & I have large hands!  Of course, we would not dream of eating it:

We could see lots of people enjoying their sailing, probably from Portmadoc Marina:

We met some children on the path, with buckets, spades, parents and excited labradors, all going for a picnic lunch on the beach. As you can see, it wasn't exactly sunny, but it was pleasant enough.

Around the headland we could see the opposite side of the little inlet the town is on, and there, there were some houses which I could only describe as Milllionaires Holiday Homes:

--   tucked away from the main road, and beautifully private (I want one!!)  After our discovery walk, we chose a little cafe from the three on the front (to right of very first photo)  and enjoyed large paninis and salads. We even managed to sit outside. It rained later on that day so we were lucky.  We vowed to come again, often.

  • Can see that I forgot something, I meant to say that I'm sorry to hear that RITA is suffering with a bad chest and cold.  Do hope you had a reasonable night, RITA.

  • Lovely pics, LINDY! Some of them remind me of Cornwall. I will try and upload photos at some time in the future.

It will be in the future because I heard earlier today that youngest daughter and family are arriving this afternoon and will stay overnight. So this week will be busy but very enjoyable. Youngest SiL wants to know if my OH needs a hand with any garden work, he really is a nice young man, his parents did a good job!

  • Hello all, hope you are all well.

Margo - when we visited Morwenstowe church the vicar's wife was preparing the church for a wedding on the Saturday and Harvest festival was happening on the Sunday. We saw the tea rooms but didn't go in.  Lovely part of the world.  Yes I'd read that that was what the vicar wanted to do for the sailors = really quite decent of him. Thanks for filling me in with the story. Hope all goes well with chemo and glad you enjoyed your glass of red wine, quite partial myself.

Lindybird - Isn't the beach called "whistling sands" I know there is a beach called that close by.  Lovely pics and brings back memories.

Not much doing here except its been very windy and wet for most of the day.

Browsing on the net to get ideas for the wedding we are attending next May - our step-granddaughter's. Keep changing my mind but will get there in the end.

  • Time to sit at the PC at last – also a necessity as my right hip is screaming at me! I enjoyed an hour gardening on Sunday, mostly cleaning up the Fuchsias to overwinter and grow cuttings for spring, so decided to do the same to the Geraniums today, but did too much, especially after a busy morning indoors. But it is so good to be able to get out in the fresh air and sunshine again – with a jacket on. It was also good to get back to church last evening.

We have a very full week this week, with appointments and meetings, but OH can use his bed: he was directed how to disconnect the mechanism and lower the head which was stuck in the air. He hasn’t complained about sleeping on the floor, but his mattress took up its normal position within minutes!

Linda – pleased you enjoyed your Sunday lunch out. I almost always have Turkey at a carvery, but it’s really the variety of vegetables that I go for, and the cranberry sauce. OH usually has Turkey and Ham – but then he smothers it with gravy; Ham and gravy is something I can’t stand, it really makes me cringe! I rarely have any gravy, but if I make it, it has to match the meat: my mother used to serve an anonymous brown gravy which seemed to be the total of numerous different gravies gathered together over a very long time and boiled up every day; put me right off the stuff. Thank you for sharing the photos of Borth-y-Gest; it looks a lovely spot..

Brenda – your area seems to be getting more than its fair share of rain, but I suppose it evens out over the year. I am contemplating Roast Beef for Christmas Dinner this year, having done a large Chicken last year. I hope the bowls went well and you didn’t get too wet going and coming.

Rita – that chest cold sounds really nasty: do take care and see a doctor if there is any infection.

Heather – we never do a real carved roast at home (can’t face dealing with leftovers) but I do like Lamb and Mint Sauce! Have a wonderful time with Callum and Amy – I suppose it is her half term (or mid-term break or tattie howkin’, whichever they call it up your way!) How is Callum getting on with his apprenticeship? I see the younger family are nipping in first, before their older cousins! It’s good that your SiL is offering help. Pleased your roofer came and it isn’t a major job.

Margo – I was pleased you were so much brighter at the end of last week, and glad your chemo week could begin today. I became the noisy neighbour this morning when I felt I was being unfairly treated – but I did confine the shouting to the kitchen – and got results!

Lynette – how lovely to be part of planning a wedding - enjoy!

We are all three going to a craft fair tomorrow morning (on for a week, but our only free time!) browsing for Christmas gifts.  Chiropody in the afternoon and then Gardening Group in the evening.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hello all- Thank you to everyone who asked after me, I am feeling better today but still coughing and feeling a bit tired, not very hungry either.  I have been sitting down most of the afternoon working on my tapestry.   The weather has not been very nice today so I probably would not have done any gardening anyway.

Lynette ,I did enjoy  your photos of Cornwall and I also loved the pictures of Lindybird's day at Borth-y- Gest.    I went there years ago when the children were little and we thought it was a lovely little place.

Heather, hope you will enjoy your very busy week , it must have been a shock to the system to have to jump up so quickly this morning!

Brenda , hope you enjoyed your Bowls afternoon, I think you must have had a lot of rain there today.

Margo, Nice to hear from you, not very pleasant to listen neighbours rows !    good luck with the chemo, hope you will not feel too bad.

  • OG- I admit to struggling with lamb leftovers. OH likes cold lamb, I don't. Beef is always cold with chutneys the next day and if any left over after that, frozen and then used to make stovies. Chicken always used to make stock. Pork is eaten cold with Apple chutney the next day but nothing else so I try not to cook a big joint unless there are a few of us.We happen to like cold cuts (except me with lamb!) but I know that a lot of folk don't.

  • Linda, Lovely photographs, especially the beach and the rugged rocks. They really are excellent when enlarged. I would love to be there, with my camera, during an Autumn storm.

Heather, Pleased your leak was fixed but what a way to end a relaxing start to your day. You will, obviously enjoy having the family around and have help in the garden, by your lovely SiL. Plenty of  cooking for you this week.

OG, Sorry your hip is screaming at you, especially as you have a full day arranged for tomorrow. The rain stopped, just as I came out of bowls, and up to now it has stayed dry this evening. It was a good game, we won, and I was pleased with the way I played :-))

Lynette, How exciting, looking for ideas for the wedding. Are you still looking for your outfit ?

Rita, Glad that you are slowly recovering, but do take care of yourself and try to rest.

Our daughter rang to say that they have sold her boyfriend's flat, after only two days on the market. They got the asking price. Having only just got over the trauma of our son's sale and move, here we go again, with our daughter now !

  • Good Morning, All. Bit grey & misty here. My OH has gone off to the allotment to dig up some of the only things that are left now, some leeks. Heather, I hope you are enjoying the family visit. OG - so pleased to hear that you've solved some of the bed issues. I agree about gravy, for me it has to match the meat. At the lunch we had, I had only a tiny trickle of the dark brown gravy on offer, which wasn't right with turkey. But they had a huge assortment of other accompaniment s, so I enjoyed the cranberry sauce.
