WEEKLY CHAT (non-osprey) SUNDAY, AUGUST 31, 2014

Happy New Week all.

  • OG that is just terrible and as you say very sad.

  • AQ - sounds like your paper-cull is very satisfying, with the addition of family history notes appearing from the general "stuff"!  Some of the places you visit look so flat and desolate; I guess that is because you live in a country of wide open spaces, but I liked the green/yellow contrasts of the fields with their spring crop.

ANNETTE - AGM just stands for Annual General Meeting - all clubs, charities, organisations - even businesses - have them.

MARGO - pleased to see Billie is back to normal!

BRENDA - sounds as if you were travelling home from the hospital after the peak time yesterday!  I was pleased to read that all is going according to plan; it is difficult to imagine it is only six weeks - I guess because he was waiting so long to have the graft done!  I am sure he will wait patiently to be able to do all the banned activities, but I am sure you will be glad when he can drive again!  We all judged the photo (and other) competitions, by secret ballot.  There were three photographic classes, one handicrafts and one flower arrangement class.

Been feeling "out of sorts" today - nothing specific, just not myself.  I shall try to get to bed early.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG, So sad to see those poor otters. People never seem to learn or think of the consequences to wildlife when they leave fishing lines and illegally lay those nets.

Hope you have managed to get to bed early and will feel fine tomorrow morning.

  • Hello Lindy, lovely to read of your news about your grand-daughter and on your birthday too, how thrilling.

Just catching up with all the news.

  • Just been reading all your news up to pg.3.  What with helping dau. move Tina, and HeatherB just back from holiday plus everything else all of you are up to , you are busy people.

Margo, that is wonderful news and do hope that you won't need treatment on Friday. Keep it up lass, you are beginning to win a small battle.  My prayers go with you and your fantastic OH for his support.

Diane - your post about computers. My dau. bought a new laptop in April which unfortunately only had Windows 8 and she has found it very hard at times to navigate.  It will be a godsend if Microsoft are returning to the more popular version with updates - too late for Dau.   As for me I bought my OH's computer off him which ran Windows XP which is OK but I find I can get on better with Google Chrome. Just a thought for others.

  • Oops HeatherB - hope it gets sorted asap. Better to play safe until new disc has arrived.

Thanks for all your news, lovely to read what has been going on.

Went to gym again today, hopefully back in routine of going twice a week and managed to get up to 18 lengths in short bursts so must keep that up.

OH umpiring last cricket match of the season - a friendly and then not sure what he's going to do with himself in the winter.  Mind you there is the rugby to go to (Saints -Northampton)

  • Heather, I'm very relieved he hasn't been asked to produce his licence lately - that could have been horrendous!

OG, absolutely heartbreaking - people can be so irresponsible.

I'm sorry to say that it's RIP to Joan Rivers.  My condolences to her family and friends.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Evening all:

Margobird: Thanks for the update on Billie.  Well, October is next month already, so that shouldn't be a problem, and December will be here before we know it - will Joe Brown be performing locally?

BrendaH:  How long will your OH be out of circulation re driving, playing bowls?

OG: Oh that's awful about the otters. :-(  Thanks for the AGM explanation - I obviously don't belong to enough clubs or charities.  Did they announce the winners last night?

Lynette: I also am working back into a regular gym routine; what drives me up the wall is that you have to build up again so slowly (at least with weights).

Clare: I was always ambivalent about Joan Rivers, but she certainly did have a devoted audience.

Off to see daughter tomorrow then plan a Major House Cleaning Event over the weekend. It's so bad our dust bunnies have dust bunnies. Poor OH asked me yesterday if I planned to do any laundry as he was running out of underwear.   Horrors!   Situation resolved this morning.  He's perfectly happy to do his own, but it's all mixed together and I won't let him near mine, which is still piling up.  :-)

  • Bus trip saga cont. Next stop Auburn. The town is the gateway to the Clare Valley, named for Oliver Goldsmith’s “The Deserted Village” which begins “Sweet Auburn! loveliest village of the plain”. Birthplace of Aussie poet C J Dennis (you may have heard of “The Sentimental Bloke”). The small lovely Anglican church in Auburn.

Mintaro, as were so many of these towns was thriving in the days of the Burra copper mine with bullock & mule trains carting ore and supplies. Now so many buildings are abandoned. This the former post office, store & carpenter shop. I love capturing old ruins.

St Peter’s Anglican church began as a Primitive Methodist chapel, later refurbished & consecrated, Anglican. And a pigeon!

St Peter’s back wall is made of pressed tin, obviously they planned extensions. I doubt there are services any more. Note the slate water tank, a common sight around the town. The Mintaro slate quarries are still producing.

This small building was used for Anglican services c1856. Leaflet declares this design to be based on the 14th century Meavy parish church Tavistock England. On checking Google the Meavy church appears large, ornate & with a tower. (I doubt everything I read.) This now a dwelling.

    to be continued

  • Good Morning, All. Dull skies here but still warm. AQ - Love the photos: I want to live in that dear little house! Rita: Nice to hear from you. Diane - Thanks for the timely warning about the possible changes in computers. I will have a consultation with my Eldest, as he is working in IT (although he is up to his neck in nappies at the moment LOL!!). Heather - That's a horror story about your OHs D. Licence & a warning to us all. Margo - I'm glad that Billie managed to get rid of that fur ball. They are a nuisance to cats.
