So 2014 has arrived and the new osprey season now starts the month after next. Or does it? The ospreys at Sanibel are already starting to nest and the wonders of the internet allow us to follow their fortunes. Then there is more than one expedition of people going out to west Africa to watch the ospreys in their winter quarters and forge links with the people out there. The Rutland team are off next Tuesday to continue their ongoing work out there. I see that Roy Dennis is going too. There are some other people going out in February. Thus before we know it , March will have arrived and speculation on when EJ will arrive will have begun. So what excitement will 2014 bring? Well if it is anything like 2013 then it will be amazing.
Well my big hope for 2014 is that Caledonia makes it back to Scotland and after nearly 11 years of watching I will have seen a Loch Garten bred chick definitely return. Of course one hopes that Blue YD makes it too.
Of course there will be a lot of pleasure and a lot of pain. But then what osprey season does not have that?

Lets hope that it is a good Osprey season all around the world, the excitement is beginning to build already, I can feel it :-)
Cannot wait to see what Caledonia will do. Whatever she decides she will know best! Hope Blue YD is sighted too if he returns, will be visiting his home nest in April, so I hope that the resident pair return safe and well there.

NEW BLOG from Richard.... :-)
So, what are the odds of Lady returning? I didn't think she would last year but now I know better than to write off her chances.
So many hopes must be riding on Caledonia......my fingers are tightly crossed!
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Yes each year the odds are increasingly stacked against Lady returning but still she amazes us.

I hope EJ follows proudly in her footsteps.
Hoping we see both Lady and EJ back this year.
Yes Lowry we want to see both of them back this year.
I have to admit in 2012 I wasn't sure if we would see Lady back again, but when she came back it was wonderful, then in 2013 I hadn't any doubts about her coming back for some reason.
She is a marvel, and I am really hoping to see her back again this year and if she does come back even if she only has one chick then that will be a result, and if its no chicks then so what! this old Lady deserves respect of the fact that she has produced 50 chicks in her lifetime, there are some that wish that she doesn't come back and passes on to a new osprey, well I think this is disrespectful to the legend that is "LADY OF THE LOCH", long may she reign, sorry for getting on my soap box but these are just my views.
I wonder what became of the young lady that squatted in LOTL nest last spring? I guess one might ask what happened to all the ladies that vied for Monty's attention?
Well we know that one of them White UR made it successfully back to Africa as she was spotted there a few weeks ago. Now that the Rutland team are going out to Africa she may well be spotted again. Ospreys will soon be complaining that they get no peace any more.
Dyfi did a wonderful blog on White UR and the others at Christmas.
I also wonder what happened to the young lady who arrived at LotL just before Lady's return.
I'd love to see Lady return but at the same time I hope she produces at least one egg which will successfully hatch - it would be heartbreaking to think of her flying all that way to not successfully breed, which is the reason for their flying all that way in the first place.
Mary, my thoughts entirely,it will be strange when the time comes to see another female take over Lady's nest let's hope it won't be this year and we see her again at LOTL.
