Italy, Siracusa:
Wednesday, January 1st, 2014 Saline di Siracusa (zona umida IWC) / Siracusa (SR) 1 Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)
[Renzo Ientile]
Thanks Deveronside
I wondered if it was perhaps a youngster returning for the first time and just touring the country but I would love it to be a bird looking to nest in the area in the future - perhaps it already is. Do you stay near the river Deveron (hence your name). It's an area we haven't really been to recently and is in the plans to visit later this year
Yes, Granny Smith, I do live close to the Deveron. I covered an area just inland from the estuary for the BTO Atlas a couple of years ago and saw an osprey hunting. The owner of the nearby farm/art gallery told me it hunts regularly at the pool and nests near Huntly.
You must have been thrilled when you saw it hunting, I know I was. I'll have to remember the areas you have mentioned when I do come up for a holiday
I'll never forget it. It was being harassed by a buzzard. I have a photo which is pretty poor but reminds me of that special day - if I need reminding!
Keep posting your sightings Granny Smith, it is always nice to see Ospreys at a Visitor Centre, but it is extra special and a bit of magic if you see them in the wild, especially fishing!

MARY - I agree it is extra special. You know you are likely to see an osprey at the centres but yes, I feel it is amazing as it is something I thought I would never see round here. I have been very secretive about it as it is in an area where not many people go, so don't suddenly want lots of people appearing - farmer wouldn't be happy!

A wise decision particularly if there is a chance that it might settle in the area if indeed it hasn't already. I'm sure we'll all enjoy your reports.
Birdies LG DU update.
A friend who knows of my interest in Ospreys has just sent me this BBC report re the Norton Marsh bird which Alan has previously mentioned.
Unbelievable!! He was sitting in almost the same spot this morning. Watched, took pics and video of him for an hour. He decided to fish and I managed to film him including his dive but couldn't see down the river bank from where I was standing. Amazing morning!! If you wish for something long enough......
Mike - I'm hoping he's moved in but now need to try and find out where else he goes.
