Italy, Siracusa:
Wednesday, January 1st, 2014 Saline di Siracusa (zona umida IWC) / Siracusa (SR) 1 Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)
[Renzo Ientile]
I have emailed Roy Dennis and he has replied that it may be Red8T.
Thanks Alan - seems Red8T is a clear bookie's favourite! Morven was seen at Villaviciosa in northern Spain on 20th March, so 6 days on is that another possibility? Or could it be our first 'osprey back from the dead' of 2014? Intriguing!

It seems too fast for either Morven or Red 8T. See Red 8T
Red 8T has not been back in England in March before.
In 2005 Red 8T was the male in residence at Loch Garten before Henry turfed him out.

Alan: With your sightings work, it is great to get a bonus like this....you must be feeling a buzz!!
RD will know his ospreys well.....here is 2014 sighting, compared to 2012 sat-track roost at Burnley road, Padiham, Lancs.

Thanks JSB. Looking at Red8T's spring route it looks increasingly likely it is him. Like Tiger I initially ruled him out as it is so early but as you say Roy knows his birds.
Re chances of who it is, my recollection is that Morven tends to remain at Villaviciosa in northern Spain for longer than just a couple of days. Were there not multiple sightings of her there one year?

Looking at last years tracking Red8T had arrived in Europe on the 22nd March before his transmitter failed. 30(05) took 6 days to reach Rutland from this point, given that birds seem to be arriving early this year (yesterday Ospreys at Kielder & Aberfoyle arrived 8 & 9 days earlier than last year) Red 8T does seem at strong possibility?
We know where Red8T was from last year's spring migration sighting. 3rd April 2013 at 19.15hrs Coombe Valley, Cornwall. But he may well be early this year.
Yes but Red 8T is usually only at Gibraltar about now. He was four days early crossing into Europe last year so it would be a big ask for him to be in the north of England by now. Not saying it could not happen but it seems unlikely.
Agreed that Red 8T can be a very swift bird at times.
Red8T: Another 2 hours yesterday would take him north of Penrith or thereabouts. That leaves 300Km to Rothiemrchus fishery today, in 7hrs 30mins, if it is him! It was quite cold last night.
