If I try to read the links (click) I get a very (very, very) small snippet of content and a prompt to sign up to a subscription to the linked website (with an associated financial cost).

Perhaps labelling the links as a paid-for service would be helpful?

Or even be daring and cut-and-paste some of the content as a taster?

No! Someone else. Every person that subscribes to the British Birds Journal has access to every monthly edition online right back to the first edition in 1907.
