Five things to love about local nature

Valentine's Day is just around the corner so to ‘Show the love’ we’ve shared some of the things we love most about exploring local nature.

Five things to love about local nature

The more you look the more you see

We might not always realise what wildlife surrounds us close to home, especially those of us that are in urban spaces. The more time you spend outdoors the more you begin to notice the array of life that might be on your doorstep. Whether it's gulls flying overhead, starlings perched on the neighbours roof or (in the right season) a mini wildflower meadow in your local park. The more you look for slices of nature near you, the more you will discover.

Connecting with your local area

Many of us don't always feel a sense of connection with the places we live in, especially if you're renting or there aren't many shared community spaces. Exploring your local nature spaces and maybe picking out your favourite local patch can make you feel a little more at home and give you something special which makes the neighbourhood feel like it's yours.

Changes in the seasons

The way nature changes and adapts all around us as the seasons change is always interesting to observe. As we move through the year you might notice changes in the wildlife you see, the shifting colours in the environment and the way a change in weather can totally change the landscape.

Just when you think you know everything about the nature around you a new season arrives and there's so much more to discover.

As much as we might love it, not all of us can get to our wildest places easily. For some us it feels like it can be quite hard work finding nature we can get to all the time and some of the most nature-rich places are completely out of the question! Hopefully we can all work towards making more and more nature accessible to everyone, but the joy of some of our local nature is that it is at our doorstep or just outside our window to be enjoyed.

Love for all nature

Our local nature is crucial for helping us discover the things we love about nature and the reasons we want to protect it. The connections we form with nature close to home help us to discover all the benefits nature can have for us, whether it's a quiet place to talk a restful stroll or home to the wildlife that brings you some joy when you spot it. Having a nearby slice of the natural world to enjoy helps us all find ways to love it and hopefully inspires us all to protect it!
