#BreakfastBirdwatch: Week One Highlights
From Tuesday last week we began hosting Breakfast Birdwatch. We wanted to help people stay in touch with nature in this difficult time while we are all at home, we wanted to bring people together to enjoy nature while we can not be physically together and we wanted to remember that nature will be there on the other side of this.
The response has been incredible, and it had brought me so much joy being a part of the community growing online every morning and sharing lovely photos, lists, recordings and more of the wildlife they are seeing whether it’s in the garden, down the road on the daily walk, or out the window of your flat.
Here I have shared some highlights from last week - let me know what wildlife you have been seeing in the comments!
Tuesday: Breakfast Birdwatch begins
Just from day one it was incredible to see the variety of views everyone had out their windows! I was definitely jealous of anyone with a beach view. RSPB Scotland's own Scott Shanks reminded us that it isn't just about the birds with his balcony bioblitz.

Wednesday: Scotland host a starling theme!
For our first themed birdwatch RSPB Scotland led the charge on Wednesday sharing ID tips, fun facts and sound recordings of starlings! So many people shared beautiful clips of birdsong with us too.

Thursday: Getting creative with bird drawings
We all got arty on Thursday morning and gave drawing our favourite garden birds a go. While my colleague Molly showed off her unbeatable sparrow art, I had a quick chat on the radio about how much fun we had been having!

Friday: Wrapping up the first week
One of our team mates from RSPB England took the lead on Friday to give out some awesome Bird ID tips!
We'll have more themes and fun every weekday morning this week so please join in, we'd love to see the wildlife on your doorstep.
The Breakfast Birdwatch is not just about what you can see, it’s also about the beautiful birdsong you can hear. You can record birdsong in your garden, balcony, from the safety of your home or while exercising (in line with government advice). Follow these simple steps and take part in Scala Radio’s Joy bringer, where your recording could be played on Simon Mayo’s show.
