FOOLED - again

We went donw to Stranraer today.. Great day and lots to see although we didn't see anything out of the ordinary for this time of year.   On way home we stopped at Cairnryan Bay for a quick scan along the tideline.

You know that way your scanning through all the waders and you do a doubletake cos there's something there that doesn't seem right. But its has its back to you.  Then you think you have something quite rare then all of a sudden it turns around and stares you straight in the scope and you feel rather silly.   It was a white Oystercatcher.

Really bizzare looking but totally accepted by all others .

  • Thats rare for me, I've never seen one, would be a real find. Well done and thanks for sharing.

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

  • Hi Soosin

Why bizzarre looking?  I've never seen one so for me it would be a biggee!

On Saturday feeling rather despondent about my doves and not feeding them for a while me and my OH, borrowed the next door neighbour's dog and decided to go for a walk. We are lucky that we live not five minutes from the Walton backwaters which is a popular place for migratory birds.  Having seen Canada geese already in a farmer's field not far from a lake I was expecting to see the same and more down at the estuary (is that the right spelling? it doesn't look right!) but came away having seen notheing other than  terns.  I have never seen an oyster catcher, are they elusive?

  • Hi Kezmo,  have you really never seen an Oysercatcher,  They're def. not elusive,  thought you might get them on the estuary.

  • Yeah we probably do but not obviously not when I am down there!  The mud flats extend quit a bit, we have only just got a really good camera (luminix - I think that's a good one!) so hoping for some good shots once we got the zoom sorted out ..........btw how long does it take to decipher a 150 page camera user guide!!!

    Wow a white 'albino' Oyster Catcher would be a rare sight for anyone. {thumbs up}

You could never miss an ordinary Oyster Catcher at all.

They are quite noisy full on kind of birds all at the best of time, and timid is not their middle name

  • Wow! Great to see a white one!

    My photos on Flickr

  • Can I just add my "wow" to the list? I've never seen a white leggie** either. Did you take any photos?

**We call oystercatchers "leggies" because they nest on the roof of the building where I work. The roof has a wee wall around the edge with a gap at the bottom and all you can see of the oystercatchers as they walk around the edge of the roof is their legs!

Make the most of today because, unlike Sky+, there isn't a rewind button.

  • No I didn't get a photograph. Was raging, My batteries had died earlier in the afternoon I  always have batteries with me!!! got home andthey were sitting on the table, Typical

It wasn't a true Albino, it didn't have the pink eyes nor 'pure' white,  more leucistic

  • Hope you get to see an oystercatcher Kezmo - I always think they look like they're walking around with a bright orange peg on their beak! They're one of the few wading species i can confidently identify and have seen them all over the place (and not always on the shoreline).

Never seen a white one though - did it still have the orange beak?

  • yeah, the orange red beak was there., it didn't look like it belonged  though . : ))
