July is when summer hums with wildlife from dawn until dusk, combining early morning sunrises and hazy pink sunsets. But as the warm summer days come to a close and our heads hit the pillow, outside our windows nature is still wide awake.
Here in Wales nightfall offers endless possibilities for wildlife, as nature gathers for its very own night-time adventure; from the atmospheric cries of the tawny owl, the swooping flight of the soprano pipistrelle to the high pitched calls of the fox as he searches for his mate.

At the end of July we’re excited to spend a memorable night under the stars for our annual Big Wild Sleepout, so why don’t you join us? It’s the perfect opportunity to go wild and discover exactly which species like to stay up late – whether you’re glamping in a caravan, getting back to basics in a den or roughing it under a blanket of stars.If you don’t fancy staying at home then you could also come and join us on one of our nature reserves for a wealth of wildlife. Be it in tranquil woodlands of RSPB Ynys-hir or the marshes of RSPB Conwy and RSPB Newport Wetlands, we’ll have night-time activities to suit everyone - from stargazing, pond dipping and stories around the campfire. The fun continues on Flat Holm Island in Cardiff too, where we’re planning a special trip to discover nature's treasures on a family camping trip like no other. Surrounded by the beautiful Severn Estuary, we’ll enjoy pirate-sized views of distant lands, hunt for minibeasts on a shoreline safari and fall asleep to the sound of breaking waves.
There’s something impossibly romantic and adventurous about spending a night under the starts. For us grownups it might bring back memories of a childhood spent outdoors, far away from the stresses of everyday life. And what child doesn’t enjoy staying up late? They can spend a night in what is essentially a homemade den, hunting for creepy crawlies and discovering what goes bump in the night.
