When June nears an end, the farmland is transformed with a host of wildlife arriving and departing. Twite will scoot through vegetation looking for an abundance of seeds for their young. Swallows will show off dipping and diving through the air, while curlews pack their bags and prepare to head back to the coastal shores towards the end of July.

The end of July also marks the Royal Welsh Show where farmers, families, food and fun all come together. RSPB Cymru will be there too, from 24-27 July, to welcome you to our wild flower-filled stand.

The Royal Welsh Show, being one of the largest agricultural shows in Europe, draws people from across the UK to the Llanelwedd showground for a four-day festival filled with competitions, celebrations and laughter. Our stand will have plenty of activities for families and children; from pond-dipping for watery wildlife, to mystery-solving as a wildlife detective - hunting for worms and tracking down what owls eat on the farm.

We’ll have a cafe-themed area for those who fancy resting their feet whilst enjoying a cup of tea and a welshcake. Whilst sitting down, our dedicated staff will be on hand to talk to you about how the food on our plates, the farmers down the road, the cows and wildlife in our countryside are all linked, and how we can all play a part in the journey from farm to fork to help save nature.

Our expert advisers will also be on hand to talk to farmers and land managers interested in providing homes for wildlife, and answering any Brexit-related questions that might crop up regarding the future of farming in Wales.

Afterwards, you’ll have the chance to tell us why food and farming is important to you by leaving a message on our giant lapwing canvas. There will also be a peat bog demonstration, where you’ll be able to get stuck in and see how Welsh peat bogs soak up water and help to prevent flooding. Peat bogs also play a crucial role in preventing climate change by storing carbon. You’ll get the chance to get your hands dirty by feeling squidgy peat, spongey mosses and scratchy heather bales whilst learning about how they provide homes for wildlife and clean drinking water for people.

We’ll even have a brand new tractor cab guide for farmers to take home. The guide will be pocket-sized so farmers and land managers can spot and identify birds while they’re out on the farm. Stickers and cool wildlife pin badges will also be available for the kids to take away as souvenirs to remember the day.

On 25 July we’re also participating in a Wales Environment Link event next door on the Woodland Trust stand. The event will launch a Vision for Sustainable Land Management in Wales that is backed by 28 Non-Governmental Organisations. In attendance will be Welsh Government members and officials, farming unions, water companies and many more! It promises to be a very interesting and inspiring event looking to the future of a sustainable and nature-rich Wales.

So come and enjoy a fun day out for all the family filled with great stories and memories about why food and farming is so important for nature. We look forward to seeing you all in Llanelwedd!
