Celebrating 5 years of a very special place
It’s been half a decade since RSPB Newport Wetlands Visitor Centre opened its doors to the public, enough time to become a firm favourite of both visitors and wildlife. With the recent stark news of nature’s decline it’s now more important than ever to get to know your local patch, and become familiar with the creatures that call it their home. Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve (which is owned and managed by Natural Resources Wales)is a genuinely inspiring place. I’d been living in Cornwall for four of the reserve’s five years, but I finally got my chance to visit it earlier this year, and wasted no time in locating a hide and settling down to watch the birds on the water. As a Canada goose whirled over the reeds and the glittering coast, I realised what a special and exciting place this is. To find a safe haven and home for so much wonderful wildlife only a short distance from one of Wales’ largest cities is excellent enough in itself, but the families I saw enjoying the landscape and the re-awakening of spring reminded me how important these places are for all of us.To celebrate the past five years, there’s an open day coming soon (see poster below). There’s some great events planned to help people of all ages get involved with nature, and it’s a brilliant way to get to know one of Wales’ largest Nature reserves. Even if it’s an old haunt of yours, please do come along and show your support. The more people who love a place and its wildlife, the more special the place becomes.
