Yesterday, I completed my third day of seven back to back training days. The cumulative mileage was 215 and elevation gained is 17400 - more miles and slightly less climbing than planned but still taxing - particularly since my son managed to share with me the cold he brought back from Greece!
I've spent time in the beautiful Wye valley and the Forest of Dean and on Monday cycled up the enchanting Llanthony valley, past the ancient priory and Capel y Ffîn. This road leads up to Bwlch yr Efengyl or Gospel Pass (see image below) - and at 1801ft above sea level, is the highest road in Wales.
The weather on day one was glorious but Sunday and Monday tested the mental stamina as much as the physical. Riding in the rain isn't my idea of fun but I won't get to choose the weather in the Alps either, and I guess my kit is getting thoroughly tested too!
The highlight of Monday (in addition to the huge slice of coffee and walnut cake in Hay on Wye - see pic below) was the red kite overhead in Talgarth and what felt like dozens of yellowhammers in the hedgerows up to Pengenffordd and Cwm Sorgwm.
So, I’m now day four into the challenge...
