Newport Wetlands Quality Badge Award

Congratulations to Tara Okon and the field teaching team at Newport Wetlands for their fantastic achievement in gaining their Quality Badge.  As many of you know this has taken months of preparation and hard work.  A special mention goes to Carolyn Maxwell for all her invaluable input (and commuting from Sandy!), plus Sonya Palmer from Dolygaer and the other volunteers who helped out on the day.  A big thank you to everyone involved!

Conwy Award

Fantastic news has also arrived from Conwy, where Charlie Stretton and the field teaching team have won an award from the Conwy Valley Civic Society.  The award, which was for their contribution to environmental education in the Conwy Valley, was presented to them by Guto Bebb (MP).  Congratulations!

Lake Vyrnwy Inspiration

And not to be outdone, Lake Vyrnwy has also played a significant part in a recent award.  In search of the greenest teens nationwide npower ran a competition for schools across the British Isles called the ‘Climate Cops SOS Competition’.  First prize has been awarded to a dozen Year 9 students at Ysgol Dinas Brân, Llangollen, for the best peat bog project.  This involved an outreach visit to the school by Jan Evans, followed by a field visit by the students to Lake Vyrnwy to study the LIFE project, after which the students created a pond and peat bog garden in their school grounds.  The ten finalists were judged by Ben Fogle and Ysgol Dinas Brân was named 2010 Champion at a presentation in Birmingham on 4 May.  They owe their success in no small measure to the inspiration provided by Jan.
