Congratulations to Steve Jones from Chepstow, who was honoured with the RSPB’s highest volunteer accolade, the President’s Award in October.
There are more than 1000 registered volunteers in Wales - people from all walks of life who dedicate their time freely to enable the charity to help save nature.
The RSPB President’s Awards has been running for 25 years to honour and recognise volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to the RSPB.
Steve has volunteered at the RSPB Newport Wetlands Visitor Centre since it opened in 2008. He describes himself as a ‘keen amateur gardener with basic DIY skills’, a far cry from the role he undertakes at the Visitor Centre, managing a team of 12 other ‘handymen volunteers’.
Together the RSPB Cymru volunteers carry out all centre maintenance and support the Natural Resources Wales staff transform large areas of habitat on the wider reserve (Natural Resources Wales own and manage Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve in partnership with Newport City Council and RSPB Cymru).
So, well done Steve and thanks again for everything that you do, to read this article in full go to www.rspb.org.uk/wales or if this has inspired you to want to volunteer with us please contact Emma Roberts on 02920 353 000 or visit: http://www.rspb.org.uk/volunteering/
