Earlier this year the first ever State of Nature report showed us unequivocally that nature is in trouble. So far the Welsh Government have responded to the report positively and as part of this it is currently looking at reviewing the payments it makes to farmers to protect the environment.
80% of the Welsh countryside is farmed land. No other form of land use is more important for wildlife. The main scheme through which farmers are paid to deliver a healthy and thriving natural environment (using public funds) is called Glastir. The Welsh Government’s re-examination of the scheme is a key opportunity to ensure Glastir is improved to guarantee it delivers for our threatened farmland wildlife in Wales.
If well-designed, Glastir could do more than anything else to help restore our beleaguered wildlife, but if poorly-designed it could condemn them to nothing but further declines.
Join us in showing the Welsh Government how much you care about our countryside by emailing the Minister Alun Davies today. Let the Minister know that you want to see the Welsh Government take this opportunity to respond to the State of Nature!
Have your say
To help you we've prepared a template email here to Alun Davies, the Minister in charge of this policy - you can personalise both the subject line and message itself to help increase its impact. Why not include something about your memories and experiences of our wildlife and why this matters so much to you?
