Since October 2013 RSPB Cymru has been running a campaign calling for Glastir, the Welsh Governments scheme to support wildlife friendly farmers, to become an effective tool in turning around the fortunes of nature in Wales.

In total over 650 people have contacted the Welsh Government calling for the Minister Alun Davies to ensure Glastir is improved to ensure delivery for threatened wildlife.

RSPB Cymru is calling for the review to ensure that Glastir:

  •         Forms part of a wider, budgeted plan to tackle wildlife declines
  •         Equips farmers with the tools for success
  •         Provides everything wildlife needs for feeding, breeding and resting
  •         Targets our best sites for wildlife

The consultation closed last Friday and we would like to thank everyone who has emailed or written to the Welsh Government.

Let’s hope that going forward Glastir will reward those farmers who are doing their bit to provide homes for nature, reducing the risk of floods, protecting water quality and storing harmful greenhouse gases.

We still believe Glastir has the potential to deliver for wildlife, it’s in the hands of the Welsh Government to make sure this is the case.

This is Government’s last chance to get it right and secure for future generations in Wales a future where they can continue to enjoy the song of lapwing and curlew in spring, the sight of pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies in woodland glades and the many other experiences the Welsh countryside offers.

Thank you again for your support, we will keep you informed as decisions on the future of the scheme are announced in the coming months.
