• Regional Director leaves to become RSPB volunteer!

Richard Powell, RSPB Eastern England Regional Director for 17 years and RSPB employee for 22 years, is going back to his roots – to volunteer at RSPB Berney Marshes in Norfolk.  Richard started his career as Reserves Manager and helped create and extend Berney Marshes in the eighties. It remains one of his favourite reserves.  Richard also helped set up Woodbridge Local Group.  Local Groups are run by volunteers and…
  • World Record Attempt - Be a part of It!

Surely there can't be a world record for the number of mobile phones donated to charity in one week?? Don't you believe it of course there is: 3,883 to be exact.

Here at the RSPB we love a challenge and so we aim to smash the world record by collecting over 5,000 old or redundant mobiles between Monday 7th and Sunday 13th February 2011.  Surprise, surprise we need YOUR help to do it.  Clean out that old draw in the…

  • Drawing for Nature!

Looking forward to seeing Rebecca, my lovely volunteer illustrator who comes into our South East Regional office in Brighton tomorrow. She comes in every Friday and does beautiful drawings for me to use in various publications like volunteer newsletters and other booklets to illustrate volunteering.

She’s very talented, here are a couple of examples of drawings she’s done for me.
    Thanks very much Rebecca, don…

  • Take an hour off to enjoy Nature

Once again we’re approaching the time for the Big Garden Bird Watch (29-30th January) and this year looks to be even bigger than last year’s amazing 530,000 participants.
I’m sure that lots of us will already have plans for how to spend the hour counting birds (curled up with a cup of tea and a pair of binoculars in certain cases) but I’d like to say thank you to all the volunteers and Local Groups who…

  • Beans means cash for the RSPB!

Do you grow vegetables in your garden or allotment? If you do, your spare marrows, beans or spuds could be a great way to raise money for the RSPB.   Tony Fox, a member of Guildford Local Group has been selling his beans in a box outside his house since 2002. The locals buy his produce and put the money in an honesty box. So far he has raised a fantastic £1,000! What a star volunteer! Thank you Tony, brilliant idea.…
  • Check it out and have your say

'Check out what?' I hear you cry: our new and improved (we think) volunteering webpages, of course.  We think they are great but we would, wouldn’t we? Take a look yourself and let us know what you think.

We’ve completely redesigned the pages and packed them full of stories from people like you, our volunteers. Find out why other people do it and how much fun it is. Hopefully, at the same time, we’ve made…

  • The Volunteering blog or the 'V' Files!

Happy New Year and welcome to an exciting 2011 for all things volunteering. To kick off the year, we are launching this - our new blog on all things volunteering in the RSPB.

This is a new initiative for us and particularly me, so be gentle with us. Myself and a number of other staff will be posting here regularly to keep you updated on what’s happening with volunteering.

We'll ask for your feedback on things,…

  • Inspiring a generation

As part of our nationwide Volunteers’ Week running from 1 to 7 June, today’s blog is about the experiences of two of our volunteers engaging with schools to bring children closer to nature. Through the Aldi Schools Outreach Project,...
