Get a 'taste' for Volunteering with RSPB NI this March

Come along to one of our practical 'volunteer taster days' at RSPB NI's Belfast Lough Reserve.

Are you interested in getting outdoors, making new friends and helping nature thrive? Volunteering with RSPI proves all that and more.

This taster day is an excellent opportunity to get a sense of the practical habitat management work that our regular volunteers carry out, and a great chance to get outdoors in some wild and wonderful spaces! The RSPB Belfast Harbour Reserves are home to some of our most spectacular species in Northern Ireland, including common terns, black-tailed godwits, redshank and lapwing. Unfortunately, many of these species and the habitats they depend on are at risk of being lost - that's where you come in!

Harbour meadows is a fantastic mixture of habitats including grassland, woodland, reedbeds and open ponds. It is home to some of our rarest bird species such as snipe, jack snipe, stonechat and willow warbler. This part of the reserve is not open to the public, so this is an exciting opportunity to enjoy a very special slice of nature!

We will begin with a moth trapping and recording activity (weather dependent), followed by fence removal at Harbour Meadows.

Join us to get a sense of the practical habitat management work that our regular volunteers carry out, while getting outside to the wild, wonderful spaces that our species call home.

When: 25 March 2023, 10.00am - 12.00pm

Where: Meet at Belfast Window on Wildlife, before driving to Harbour Meadows (5 minutes from WoW)

Activity: We will begin with a moth trapping and recording activity (weather dependent), followed by fence removal at Harbour Meadows.

This FREE event is suitable for all ages, however anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Make sure to wrap up warm, with sensible footwear and waterproofs. Hi-vis will be provided.

Please contact aoife.debhal@rspb.org.uk to sign up for the event.

There are more than 12,000 fantastic volunteers and between them, they contribute almost one million hours every year! Our volunteering roles can be tailored to your skills, interests and circumstances. You do not have to be an RSPB member to volunteer with us, you don't even have to be a bird or wildlife expert to volunteer for us. There are many ways you can get involved with our work. If you don't know a robin from a redwing, it really doesn't matter.
