An unexpected visitor makes an appearance on a recent RSPB NI Local Group visit to The Bann Valley

During a recent RSPB NI Local Group excursion to The Bann Valley, the group was delighted to spot something special gliding around the hides. The Local Group excursion took place on November 9, and the morning started off as a cold, grey Saturday where expectations were low in what they might spot due to the weather and the high tide. The group were huddled together in one of the hides situated along the river Bann estuary, where they observed the usual winter residents of golden plover, lapwing, great crested glebe, red breasted merganser, and other local waders could be spotted.

Binoculars were aimed to the sky, in the hope of spotting something different and the group were treated to a merlin, one of our smallest birds of prey and a glaucous gull glided past, bringing some excitement, but the best was yet to come as one eager bird-water spotted what appeared to be an osprey! The bird flew a little closer allowing them to confirm the sighting and they watched in amazement as the majestic bird glided and hovered over the water hunting for fish, before it snapped up a tasty trout for lunch and soared away.

An unusual sighting at this time of year, the osprey typically migrates to countries like the Gambia and Senegal where the climate is much warmer and they will find an abundance of fish for feeding. This spectacular bird of prey is an Amber List species because of its historical decline and low breeding numbers. The species has been absent from Ireland since the 19th century but sightings are becoming increasingly common and their is hope that more sightings will increase the chances of these birds calling Ireland home once again in the future.
