Late afternoon at Felixstowe Ferry ........... featuring our most common small wader!

A week ago I made my first visit of the year to Felixstowe Ferry - it was late afternoon and I wasn't sure how much I would see given that the light would soon be fading.  The birds I did see were well worth the effort:

A most suitable bird on a wire.  Happily, there were two of them (for joy!).

The Godfather (our local great black-backed gull) wasn't in view but I was more than happy to snap this herring gull.

After all, this gull makes its beautiful, soaring flight look effortless.

A beautifully patterned youngster.

Waggy arrived, with his usual distinctive noises.

I always love to see him - wagtails are gorgeous and very feisty little birds!

To my pleasant surprise a good number of dunlins were about on the mud flats.

The tide was incoming so they were making the most of what was on offer before it disappeared under the water.

A distant redshank.

This black-headed gull doesn't bat an eyelid as the dunlin digs at its feet.

'We've got you surrounded!'

One last snap of these lovely little waders!

Enjoy!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
