First a quick history. We have had a pair of blackbirds who regularly visit our garden and when they have fledged their youngsters, they visit with those youngsters to feed. We love this and try to encourage and feed.
Some days ago, a neighbour found some feathers that he thought were from a blackbird on his lawn so we guess that one of the pair met an untimely end, sadly. Four days ago we found a juvenile male blackbird on the ground in the garden. We know he is a juvenile because his tail feathers have not fully formed, his beak has only started to turn orange and the orange rings around is eyes are starting to form.
He seems to be somewhat “lost” sheltering from the rain under our bbq but isn't seen late evenings . He has eaten some mealworms and wild bird seed but rejected minced beef and cat food.
Because he seems to be lost and not searching for food, simply sitting on the ground (maybe because of the loss of parents). He is able to fly. We want to provide some shelter for him off the ground, we don’t have a tree that is big enough to house him. We do have a very elderly cat who hasn't been interested in the birds or fledgelings, which is nice. She simply lays down in the garden while they fuss around within a meter or two.
So, anybody got any ideas about how we can provide some sort of help or shelter? Any suggestions welcome.
