MYSTERY FUNGI QUIZ #12

Hello Folks!

Fungi come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours. Whilst some are edible, others are poisonous and best avoided. They can be found almost everywhere and are often easily overlooked. Many can be seen in woodland and meadow, especially at this time of year.

Each Monday for 12 weeks I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the UK fungus. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.

MYSTERY FUNGI QUIZ #12
Clue: Wolves missed an opportunity.

  • Thinking of the dual or double bit and the lilac clue how about Bicoloured Deciever ? I am sure it is lilac coloured on the stem at least.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

I can see you all have reserv(ations) about this one.

About the only contribution I can make to this relates to MrsT's hint above. There is an RSPB reserve called Wolves Wood near Hadleigh in Suffolk. How that has any link to a fungus I've no idea.

  • I think one of you may have hit on the right answer but for the life of me I can't work out why.

As this is the last one of the series I suspect MrsT has been especially devious. All will be revealed soon.

  • Congratulations to all of you who guessed Wood blewit (Tricholoma nudum). First a bit about the clues: Wolves missed an opportunity. Wolves refers to our Wolves wood reserve in Suffolk. From this we take ‘Wood’. If someone blew it, then you might say they missed an opportunity to do something. The second clue: Lilac, simply refers to the colour of this mushroom. My third, and perhaps not so obvious clue: I can see you all have reserv(ations) about this one. Don't worry it’s not dual chromium. Reservations hinted at reserves and in this case Wolves wood. Not dual chromium is an anagram of the latin for Wood blewit, Tricholoma nudum. Other latin names for this species include: Clitocybe nuda and Lepista nuda.

Belonging to the Tricholomataceae family, the Wood blewit fungus ranges from lilac to purple-pink in colour. An edible fungus, Wood blewits are commonly found in association with decaying leaf litter. They have a distinct odour, which can help distinguish them from similar species. The odour has been described as being similar to frozen orange juice.

A picture of a Wood blewit is found here.

Did you know that: this fungus is also known as Blue stalk mushroom.

Keep an eye out for next week’s fish quiz!

    Take care,

    Claire

  • None of us were even close with this one. I had absolutely no idea. I think MrsT was determined it wasn't going to be a whitewash. Overall result for the series:

  • I hope you lot are good on fish because I know less about fish than I do fungi - I know more about fungi now it has to be said but even so - that is still a miniscule amount
