Hello Folks! Fungi come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours. Whilst some are edible, others are poisonous and best avoided. They can be found almost everywhere and are often easily overlooked. Many can be seen in woodland and meadow, especially at this time of year. Each Monday for 12 weeks I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the UK fungus. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.MYSTERY FUNGI QUIZ #9Hats off to David for catching Shelob.P.S: Normal service will return shortly. Congratulations to all of you who guessed Goliath webcap (Cortinarius praestans). First a bit about the clues. Hats off to David for catching Shelob. Hats off refers to cap. David refers to the biblical story where the future King of Israel (David) defeats the giant Philistine warrior, Goliath. Shelob refers to the large spider that features in Tolkein's Lord of the Rings story. Spiders create webs. Putting it all together and you get Goliath webcap. The second clue: Habit cape glow is an anagram of Goliath webcap.
Goliath webcaps belong to the Cortinariaceae family. This fungus has an orangey yellow cap and is convex in shape. This fungus has no odour and with its thick flesh is considered edible. Found in decidious woodland, Goliath webcaps prefer calcareous soils.
A picture of a Goliath webcap can be seen here:
Did you know that: this fungus was one of 35 mushrooms given legal protection in Hungary in 2005.
Keep an eye out for next week’s fun(gi) quiz!
Take care,
Claire

Seaman and TJ deserve the credit, they set me on the right track. Boiler fixed, toasty warm and dry, and given the wind and rain that is now hammering us not a moment too soon.
