MYSTERY FUNGI QUIZ #4

Hello Folks!

Fungi come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours. Whilst some are edible, others are poisonous and best avoided. They can be found almost everywhere and are often easily overlooked. Many can be seen in woodland and meadow, especially at this time of year.

Each Monday for 12 weeks I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the UK fungus. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.

  • Congratulations to all of you who guessed Field bird’s nest fungus (Cyathus olla). First a bit about the clues: Carolus clusius pondered on the peridioles. Bird’s nest fungi were first mentioned in Flemish botanist Carolus Clusius’s 1601 publication ‘Rariorum plantarum historia’. The second clue: A not-so bizarre place to lay eggs. A nest would not be a good place to lay eggs, especially for a bird.

Belonging to the Nidulariaceae family, the fruiting body of the Field bird’s nest fungus is funnel shaped, greyish brown in colour on the outside and grey on the inside. The eggs or peridioles, of which there are normal 8-10 in the cup, are white or grey. Obtaining nutrients from dead or decaying matter, Field bird’s nest fungus are often found on woody debris or stems still in soil.

A picture of a Field bird’s nest fungus can be seen here.

Did you know that: When rain hits the nest-like cup of the Field bird’s nest fungus, the peridioles are often thrown out tiddlywinks style onto the ground.

Keep an eye out for next weeks fun(gi) quiz!

    Take care,

    Claire

  • Serves me right for cheating, I got the wrong one. I thought it was Common Bird's-nest Fungus (Crucibulum laeve).
