Hello Folks! Fungi come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours. Whilst some are edible, others are poisonous and best avoided. They can be found almost everywhere and are often easily overlooked. Many can be seen in woodland and meadow, especially at this time of year.Each Monday for 12 weeks I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the UK fungus. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. That clinches it for Marjus. The latin name of Destroying Angel is Amanita virosa. You struggled a bit to get a usable anagram out of that, MrsT. LOL

I did look up the Latin name, Marjus.
The important thing is you knew what it was without having to look up books etc. Amazing knowledge.

Congratulations to all of you who guessed Destroying angel (Amanita virosa). First a bit about the clues: Not heavenly, so beware. We normally equate Angels with heaven, but with the word ‘destroying’ in front of it, perhaps this is not the case here, hence the warning. The second clue: Clue: A vain soar miat is an anagram of the Latin name for Destroying angel. For those of you who thought I made up the word 'miat', it is an alternative name for the plant Memecylon edule.
Belonging to the Amanitaceae family, the Destroying angel is a deadly poisonous fungus and must NOT be eaten. Closely related to the Death cap, the Destroying angel has a pale ivory cap, stalk and gills. Destroying angels are best found in Autumn in decidious woodland, especially in association with Beech.

Did you know that: the Destroying angel fungus is often mistaken for a Horse mushroom. This can prove to be a fatal mistake, as this fungus is deadly poisonous and is responsible for a great many deaths.

I'm duly reprimanded for doubting you MrsT. MIAT is also apparently the name of Mongolian Airlines in case you need to travel in that part of the world.
Aye, that too, but I wasn't sure how well saying Mongolian airlines would soar or be vain would go down.
