Bird baths quickly freeze over in winter so I resort to using seed trays (green) They are easy to de-ice by simply upturning them or running under kitchen tap. Blackbirds love them and I place three in different positions.
Also, as I have a fairly small feeding area I find that click and turn stackable feeders allow me to offer a variety of foods with much less wasteage. They're cheap too so that I can afford to replace them whilst cleaning those in current use.
Sounds very sensible! Our ground water bowl is one of those big plastic dishes meant for large plant pots. The birds love it!
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Hello Eastham, and welcome from me in Lancashire.
My birds prefer our water features to dishes, although I do put dishes out. They seem to like the running water.
Cheers, Linda.
