Hello Folks! Flowers not only decorate our meadows, our woodlands, our roadsides with splashes of colour, but they also provide food and shelter for a whole host of insects. We have only to look at UK flowers to appreciate their beauty, their scent, their diversity. Each Monday for 12 weeks I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the UK flower. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.Keep a note of each species, as I will be asking which is the odd one out at the end of the quiz.MYSTERY FLOWER QUIZ#5Foul wreck coo.

You are right Ray, I will not dwell on this any longer.... well not at least until monday.
Congratulations to all of you who guessed Cuckoo flower (Cardamine pratensis) or as it is more commonly known Lady’s smock. First a bit about the clues: Foul wreck coo, is of course an anagram of cuckoo flower and the second (though hardly needed) clue: Many insects may have clocked up a visit or two, refers to cuckoo clocks, from which you might guess cuckoo flower.
A member of the Brassicaceae family, the perennial cuckoo flower with its long narrow leaves can grow to 40-60 cm tall and has pale pink flowers that grow on a spike. Much loved by the Orange tip butterfly, this elegant plant flowers from April to June and can be found in moist or wet habitats, that might include damp grasslands, roadsides and river banks.
A picture of a cuckoo flower can be found here.
Did you know?: According to folk lore, the cuckoo flower is sacred to fairies and is therefore unlucky to be brought indoors.
Keep an eye out for next weeks mystery flower.
Take care,
