Hello Folks! Flowers not only decorate our meadows, our woodlands, our roadsides with splashes of colour, but they also provide food and shelter for a whole host of insects. We have only to look at UK flowers to appreciate their beauty, their scent, their diversity. Each Monday for 12 weeks I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the UK flower. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.Keep a note of each species, as I will be asking which is the odd one out at the end of the quiz.MYSTERY FLOWER QUIZ#3Not enough to confuse Miss Piggy.

Congrats to all of you who guessed Frog orchid (Coeloglossum viride). So why wouldn’t Miss Piggy be confused?? Miss Piggy, as a big fan of Kermit, knows her frogs. The Frog orchid, however, is often mistaken for another type of orchid, the Pale green orchid. The distinguishing features of the Frog orchid are the knotched labellum and the absence of a tubercle. The labellum is the part of an orchid that attracts insects that will pollinate the flower, the labellum is a modified petal, it is large and often irregular in shape. In relation to orchids, the tubercle is a warty nodule on the lip of the flower.
The Frog orchid has, as you would expect, green flowers which have a tinge of purple of pink. The petals are long and thin and curve inwards. Flowering in late May and June, it is often found in moist rich soil in wet meadows and wet decidious woods.
A picture of a Frog orchid can be found here.
Did you know?: Coeloglossum viride var. Bracteatum is currently being investigated as a possible treatment for vascualr dementia.
Keep an eye out for next weeks mystery flower.
Take care,
ClaireP.s I'm not sure, despite needing a hair cut, that I have enough hair to do a Miss Piggy hair swipe.
