Hello Folks!Be they big or small, insects are undoubtedly highly fascinating creatures. Chances are wherever you are, whatever you're doing, an insect is not a million miles away and you might not even know it! So what better reason than to have a quiz to see how much you know about them.
Each Monday for 12 weeks, I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the insect. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.MYSTERY INSECT QUIZ#12There are holes in the start of this crop.

The only 'Puys' I can think of is in France, Massif Central, stunning scenery or lentils and then there are Pug moths - nope, not going to get it, fried brain.

It is the last one guys, so I thought I would make it a little trickier... that said I think our man Ray might be onto something.
If only I knew
Congratulations to all of you who guessed Wheat-stem borer (Cephus pygmaeus). First a bit about the clues. The first clue: There are holes in the start of this crop. Holes are often created by insects that can bore into vegetation. A crop refers to wheat and start, the stem. The second clue: Puys pug scheme is an anagram of the latin name for this insect - Cephus pygmaeus.
The Wheat-stem borer is a sawfly and is roughly 5-10mm in length. Sawflies have no visible waist between their thorax and abdomen and the females have a saw-like ovipositor. This sawfly has two yellow coloured bands around its abdomen. Often found in grassland around May to July, Wheat-stem borers do have a habit of making holes in the stems of cereal crops. A picture of Wheat-stem borer can be found here.Keep an eye out for a Mystery insect poll next week!Claire
