Poll time - Make Your Nature Count 2012

I hope most of you have seen Tom's post from yesterday regarding the opening of pre-registration for this years Make Your Nature Count survey  if not it's here.

This is the ideal survey for you if you have taken part in the Big Garden Birdwatch and you cannot wait until next January.  Make Your Nature Count, is the RSPB’s summer wildlife survey and is this year running from the 2nd to 10th June 2012.

Now in its fourth year, Make Your Nature Count simply asks you to watch the birds in your garden or local park for an hour, in much the same way as Big Garden Birdwatch.  Additionally, we would like you to record chicks, summer migrants and the occurrence of eight non-bird species.  This year, the animals we’re asking about are badgers, hedgehogs, red squirrels, grey squirrels, roe deer, muntjac deer, moles and, for the first time ever, slow worms.  We’re really interested in what this survey might tell us about the importance of gardens and green spaces for our local wildlife – but we need your help!

To register for the survey and find out more about taking part, simply visit www.rspb.org.uk/naturecount  As well as making submitting your results easier once you’ve done your survey in June, by registering now you’ll get the added bonus of receiving a 10% discount on products in the Bird feeder and Wildlife categories on the RSPB online shop.

If you know of anyone who might like to take part who doesn’t have access to the internet, paper survey forms can be ordered by calling 0300 456 8330.   Our supporters are always asking us for more good excuses to sit down, relax and simply enjoy the wildlife that comes to their gardens...here is that excuse!”

To fill the gap between the BGBW and MYNC surveys we've put our heads together and come up with a little poll to wet your appetite for the survey. With summer visitors spilling into the country and hibernating creatures springing back into life we want to know out of the creatures listed below which you are most looking forward to seeing back in or over your garden or local patch. if you don't get any of these creatures which one is the most desirable? Use the voting options below and add a comment if you wish.

Now we've been pretty stingy here and only given 8 to choose from including some from the MYNC special list, if you have another species in mind that arrives in the spring and summer that you feel deserves a mention please tell us about it! We've left it open for two weeks.

  • I've voted for House Martin 'cos they tried to nest on my house three years ago but the nest crashed to the ground - I put up a Martin box next to the failed site but it has not been used yet.

2nd vote would go to Bats, they regularly swoop over my small back garden so I've just put up a Bat Box - fingers crossed.
