Hello Folks!Be they big or small, insects are undoubtedly highly fascinating creatures. Chances are wherever you are, whatever you're doing, an insect is not a million miles away and you might not even know it! So what better reason than to have a quiz to see how much you know about them.
Each Monday for 12 weeks, I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the insect. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.MYSTERY INSECT QUIZ#3A jewel that lacks lustre.
Well I'm no film buff anymore than I'm an insect expert and the only Robert I can think of is Robert Redford. Not sure if that helps!

Ooh! Nice one Aiki!
Hi,Congratulations to all of who guessed Downy Emerald. First, a bit of about the clue I gave you on Wednesday: Young Robert would be green with envy. From ‘young Robert’, you get Robert Junior (Jnr) and with the film reference I was referring to the movie star Robert Downey Jnr (ummm...lovely) who recently played Sherlock Holmes, take away the ‘e’ and you have Downy. Green with envy would mean that the jewel I am looking for is an emerald and hence Downy emerald.
The Downy emerald is one of the three Emerald dragonflies found in the UK. With their bright, almost luminous eyes, Downy emeralds are 48mm in length and have metallic green bodies that have a coppery sheen. Their thorax, as their name suggests is downy. Though they can be found all over the country, their largest concentrations are in the South-east. So next time you are near a pond that is close to or near a deciduous woodland keep an eye for a Downy emerald! Piccie here.
Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery insect quiz!
