Hello Folks,RSPB reserves are great places for you to get closer to nature. So what better reason than to have a quiz to see how much you know about them. Each Monday for 12 weeks, I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify this RSPB reserve. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest. Just for fun!: Make sure you keep an note of the first letter of each reserve as the weeks go by, and at the end of week 12, see if you can rearrange all 12 letters to spell out a message about our reserves. Here goes ....MYSTERY RSPB RESERVE#8Luckily the demon barbers didn’t scare away the Recurvirostra avosetta.
I thought the Avocets at Blacktoft and Demon Barber folk group recently played at Hull made a cast iron case, needless to say I am nowhere near as sure now.
Roll on Friday when MrsT gives us the answer

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
Seaman ---I did find something about old colliery spoil at Blacktoft but could not find anything to back it up,just a headline.
Agree about Friday as found I got hooked on this just like on Monday we went to Somerset levels and stopped at one place looking for the Cranes and there was a basket there made out of willows just like a shopping basket but about 3metres high and 3 metres across in a field.Turns out a advert for a centre on the levels, think the banner had got blown off in gales.
Perhaps the demon barbers are those lovely creatures with formidable horns that cut the grass at Old Moor?

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

Drum roll please.... congrats to all who got this right! This week’s mystery reserve is..... Old Moor in South Yorkshire. At the heart of the Dearne valley, Old Moor is sited on an old colliery. In fact, in the 1950’s there were around 30 coal mines in the area which employed 30,000 people. Set in 250 acres of wetland, Old Moor is home to, not only many species of wildfowl, but also Kingfishers, Lapwings, Golden plover and Tree Sparrow. If you are lucky you may also see Snipe and Peregrine. Did you know that last august a musical line up including ‘The Demon Barbers’, performed live at Old Moor as part of the Voice for nature folk concert.
More information on Old Moor can be found here:

Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery reserve quiz.

P.S - Don’t forget to jot down the first letter of each reserve.
Since the weather's been so bad on my day off I've been trying to work out what the message is - and I've even got an answer! It's probably totally wrong though. :-D
Gosh, are they always this hard?!
Well done to those who were correct.
MRS T. oh dear could only find 3 Avocets at Old Moor LOL.They were obviously lost.Put them on the National Express for Arne.

These have been really difficult, Mrs T at her cryptic best...don't let it put you off, hopefully the next one might be slightly easier

Good job I hadn't seen the Demon Barbers at Old Moor but at Swanage! and I'd made an anagram out of their name - Arne bombers but with an extra D and said the group must be nothing to do with this. I clearly have lost the plot - hopefully people ignoring my comments - hub usually does!
