My husband wants to know what kind of bird he saw in Cumbria about 6 weeks ago:
It went "Quark" while at the same time tipping sideways (one wing to the sky, the other to the ground) as it flew along. He says it kept doing this very distinctive behaviour as it flew. The call was always accompanied by the movement of the whole body. It was large, but he could not detect the colour because it was outlined against the sky.
Any ideas, please?
A duck??
Could be a Raven. They make a "quark" sort of call and they are quite big. Check them out here and you can also listen to the call.

Got to agree with TJ the very word "quark"sounds Raven like and they do seem to put on flying displays. It is a bird that is seen often in Cumbria, here at our side of the Pennines they are less frequent.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
Agreed.
The Ravens here are showing off at the moment too, in between giving a roosting tawny a kicking, they do seem to display for no obvious reason.
It's both what you do and the way that you do it!
