MYSTERY BIRD #12

Hello Folks,

Here's something for all you fans of our feathered friends. Each friday for 12 weeks, I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify this bird. The following Monday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. The day after I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.

Here goes ....

MYSTERY BIRD #12
You won't turn your back on my stellar plumage, so late in the evening.

  • I thought it was a Starry Owlet-nightjar, a bird endemic to Papua-New Guinea. I wasn't even in the right continent.

Like Viv I've had to look this one up and I think I know what it is but as I've cheated it wouldn't be fair to say it. If you've been to Paramo de Frontino (which I haven't) you might have heard of it but I certainly hadn't. All I'll say is that Mrs T's original fiendish cryptic clue fits this bird very well.

  • As my final offer from a well travelled birder we were talking to on our local reserve

Dusky Starfrontlet, one I have never heard of so I refuse to take the blame for it being wrong

With a cop out like that I should have been an MP

    Pete

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • with the clue is it a humming bird

    Ray

ps  Think you have it there Seaman

a good laugh is better than a tonic

  • Notice the cop out clause there though Ray,I wonder if MrsT realises her mystery birds get discussed by birders on the edge of gravel pits in the wilds of North Yorkshire ?,could be a new claim to fame.

That's what I concluded from my research. Apparently it's endemic to Colombia. You've got some well travelled friends, Seaman.

The guy in question talks about countries I have never heard of never mind birds I have never heard of,fascinating bloke to talk to on a quiet birding day but never pushes himself on you.

Despite my acute hearing, the furthest north I have been in the last few days is Coventry and nowhere near any gravel pits - so you're safe :)
