  • It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has voted yes to find out why they think mesh bags are a good idea. Many of you have pointed out the valid points for not using them (threat to wildlife through getting entangled, plastic waste etc), can anyone think of a valid reason for using them?

The arguments for them that I have heard are for holding them together during transport and for convenience when feeding, both of which don't sit easily with me. It has been shown by a number of bird food sellers, including ourselves, that you don't need them for packaging as fat balls hold together just as well without mesh bags.

With regards to convenience, it is very easy to put them into a simple cage feeder to hang them up for the birds which is far safer than using mesh which has the potential to get tangled in birds claws, legs or even tongues (starlings and woodpeckers especially).

    Any thoughts?

  • I think they should have the courage of their convictions and explain their reasons, otherwise all I can think is we had a visit from some manufacturers following on from Lolly's campaign.

  • I wouldn't pay too much attention to the single Yes vote, unless the person chooses to explain it. Every forum has its jokers, and it may be someone who has never even posted. Anyway, have added my "No".

  • I am with you there Grandpaddy, its sweats in those polythene bags too,I have stopped buying anything in polythene,I go to local shops that use the good old paper bags, they can go into the compost bin,and I am supporting the local shops in my area too, lets show the supermarkets we dont support them,I also support Farmers Markets, the produce is fresh,I went to one last week and the carrots still had the soil on them, how fresh is that, the meat is better too

  • Thank you all for taking the time to vote on the poll, with 98.1% of 52 votes in favour of bird food without mesh bags, that gives a pretty clear message.
