MYSTERY BIRD #11

Hello Folks,

Here's something for all you fans of our feathered friends. Each friday for 12 weeks, I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify this bird. The following Monday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. The day after I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.

Here goes ....

Answer in the morning, and then to wait for the last quiz on Friday, hopefully I might get that one, if not better luck on the next lot, best get my brain in gear!

  • Congratulations to all of you who guessed Amsterdam albatross (Diomedea amsterdamensis). That was clearly TOO easy!!!

Confined to one island in the southern Indian Ocean (Amsterdam Island), the population of the Amsterdam albatross is alarmingly small, only around 100 adult birds or so. Both human and non-human activities have had a massive impact on these albatrosses. Threats include introduced predators and longline fishing.

Once thought to be a subspecies of the Wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans), Amsterdam albatrosses pair for life and reach sexual maturity at around 9 years, with the average life expectancy around 30-40 years. Quite what the Amsterdam albatross eats is unknown, but it probably consists of fish, squid and crustaceans

Keep an eye out for your next and sadly :( last mystery bird.
