After some concerns which were raised last week, we'd like to ask your opinion on who should be able to see your Community profile page?
That's the page that tells people about you, and links to your friends and recent posts etc.
Why not check out the news from the wildlife enquiries team?
Voted, thankyou.
HI-
FIRST PIECE OF ADVICE GIVEN TO ME WHEN JOINING A FORUM back in 2002
NEVER put your real name on a forum etc.
I passed it on to all members of my family
:)

For advice about Birding, Identification, field guides, binoculars, scopes, tripods, etc - put 'Birding Tips' into the search box
Hi S
LOL true true and true..over and over again.
I have met people who have given similar advice. Keep all private details of your life off the Forums - sadly 'decent' people do get bitten...and learn the hard way.
The thing is if you are unlucky to come across an unsavoury person in cyberland, they will suck your details with a straw for their own ends. There is nothing you can do at all to stop them
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Hi Lolly
I have been a member of the RSPB Forums since 2007, and I have seen it go through a lot of changes.
A little off topic here...about the subject of Trolls, and other people who are not all they seem to be.
I think with new friends in cyberland, it should be treated like real life as if you would met a stranger...and find out about them, and they you. It takes a while to do that, and it should be the same in cyberland.
You need to know a bit about people first, by asking questions about them, they find out about you as a person, they ask questions, and then see you have anything in common at all
It is finding out about that person, and making YOUR, and ONLY your own decisions if you wish to know that member or not - not go by other peoples rules, and thoughts.
That is the healthy way of making friends in cyberland
Back on topic once more.....
You can easily switch of settings to suit yourself in Facebook. I give little information of my private life in my profile on Facebook, as I am not on the search for people to talk to out of desperation. Everyone has their own thoughts on that matter. I talk about birds only with other birders.
In Facebook, I have my settings as friends only, and I have blocked anyone that I do not feel comfortable with...simple as that. Has to be done!
On the other hand I love birds, and love the RSPB because I know i will be able to talk about my hobby to other likeminded people about birds - that is what I am here for so I have a detailed Profile for that reason alone.
Looking forward to see what changes that the moderators provide us with.
Nicely put Blackbird,I did not realise we had another troll on today.I must miss half of what happens if it is not on the threads I use often.
Pete
Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can
Hello All,
I have cast my vote also. unfortunately in these unpleasant times I think we have to think about security of peoples details as sad as it seems....
Sorry, I meant to say that I was a little of topic - you are right with what you have said on matters here, and they are perfectly justified.
I think TBH, we are all on topic on here with different thoughts about Trolls as you say they blight our lives with their behaviour, and spoil things for us.
We have been affected with Trolls over the past 2 weekends on this site, along with a Spammer yesterday morning
I have been out at least one day over the past 2 weekends, myself, and have only noticed things are 'off' and 'there are problems' on my return to post on here
Threads like this one are with members expressing what they think about issues and they what to see things improve. We have all reached that point now.
It has taken a while for people to build up trust and friendship - then out of the blue it takes one situation for all the dymanics to change very quickly - it is nipping the problems as they arise now and in the future...be on our guard!
Strangers who we have never met in the real world mean nothing to us, if they are not nice people...that is how they are.
That is how they are... they are nobodies in cyberland who are anyone, ineffective, and no-one at the same time best way to see things.
I hope that it all settles down asap
lorraine r said: Hi Blackbird Sorry I am really not off topic as if it was not for the trolls or community members causing problems there would be no need to have this poll. I like you Seaman miss half of what is going on and if there is not a post warning the community then I am totally unaware. I have been very wary of what I post on this site from day one and I believe that if the site is not made more secure people will leave as a few good members all ready have or they are not posting as much as they used too. The RSPB will know that postings are down because of the Troll a couple of weekends ago and this poll shows that they are concerned about security issues which I am glad they are taking seriously and it might put back a bit of reassurance to the community. I agree with you Blackbird that it is a fantastic site to discuss your hobby with likeminded people and it will be interesting to see what the moderators put in place.

Unknown said: I have not contributed to this thread, until seeing this post. And I have to wholeheartedly agree with you on your points in this thread Blackbird - after all, if a certain individual had known less about myself and a few friends, there would not have been the ability to create a spoof forum specifically about us, making fun of our children, our pets and our partners. Unfortunately though - a little too much was known of our private lives, so this was very possible to be done - wasn't it Kathy? 'Twas hard to believe how vile some people could be 'once you got to know them'. I have been a member of this forum since it was the old style forum - two changes ago? However, changed my name on here, and don't really contribute to it at all - however I do get lots of information from it. My profile has remained pretty much empty since changing to 'Tweet' from my old time username. I shall likely be banned for bringing this 'spoof forum' up - but that's okay - it's just very tedious seeing someone play victim all the time after them being part of a very vile little project.

Tweet you have the support of every genuine person on here. What happened to you was shocking and needed to be brought to our attention.I think we all understand that a Good Egg award does not automatically mean a good person and we have to guard from within at all times, the same as gaurd with strangers
Of all creatures, man is the most detestable, he is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. ~ Mark Twain
Hi Rhona/JudiM
This is not the place to discuss this as it is the RSPB. Respect the moderators wishes and keep issues unrelated to bird/wildlife issues off this Forum
That is enough of this nonsence. I do not know what is going on, and I do not care at all. I am here to talk about birds and that is all as an fully paid RSPB member.
I have reported relevant posts to the moderators.
I am the one who goes out bird watching, writes reports. takes photographs. talks about birds, and so forth so bear that in mind before anyone else answers this thread
Thank you
NB about time this thread needs to be closed as it is off topic now
