VOTE FOR YOUR TOP OF THE POPS BIRD SONGSTER!

Forget the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez, we want to know who your Top of Pops ‘bird’ songster is. Birds not only use their song to attract a mate, but also to proclaim a territory. We’ve picked a Top 10 for you to choose from. Some songs are melodic, others wistful and haunting – I am sure you all have a favourite. To help you decide, here’s a snippet about each bird, with a link to their songs.

Great tit
To match my rather natty yellow and black garb, I have a charming two syllable song, amongst other calls. The largest of the tit family, I am surely a winner!

Chiffchaff
What’s in a name, well a mighty fine song for a start. I may not wow the crowds with my plumage, but I can coin a tune!

Blackcap
Just call me the Northern nightingale!

Starling
Sure I can do cover versions, but my song is second to none.

Willow warbler
I might look like a Chiffchaff, but one thing that defines us is my melodic song.

Dunnock
I’m no Robin red breast or Jenny wren. I might skulk in the undergrowth, but when I sing I give it my all.

Song thrush
I might repeat myself, but you won’t forget my song in a hurry.

Blackbird
I’ve got one word for you – mellow. That’s me.

Goldfinch
Liquid gold.

Robin
If my red chest doesn’t wow you, then my song sure will.

  • There is something very whimsical about the Starling song, plus you never really know what your going to get, their mimicry skills can be quite brilliant!

I have to say Blackbird is my top notch singer - so Blackbird is my vote (their songs are never the same, and all Blackbirds have different 'unique' songs that they produce)

Song Thrush takes second place as they have a re-sounding song that is unmistakeable day or night, and the song travels for miles everywhere in the vacinity.

  • I love the Dunnock,Robin and Wren too but voted Blackbird, and one is singing beautifully as i type.:o)))))

  • i voted for blackbird but my favourite is the skylark its amazing singing until you just see a little dot in the skybut you can still here them fantastic

  • Wow, the blackbird really is number one!!! I voted for chiffchaff as i just love to hear them singing their cheery song but it was a tough call they are all great. I agree with the skylark comments, they are just brilliant, possibly top farmland songsters, although linnets and yellowhammers might disagree!

It's very close for second, and for the wooden spoon, starling and great tit both with no votes! Last day to get your vote in so if you have not yet cats your vote there is still time!

  • Voting has ended now and the blackbird was the run away winner, which is exactly what was found on the PURE sounds website where bird sounds can be downloaded from the RSPB birdsong library at The Lounge, have a look here and read about the most popular downloads here.

Strangely it seems that the black-headed gull sound is the third most popular download, could that be people longing for a reminder of the sound of the seaside? If you have downloaded it, tell us why, we would love to hear from you!
